LESSON IDEA: WEBSITE-CREATION TOOLS Name: Becca Lindsey Directions: Using the template below, describe how students

could use a blog, wiki, or other website-creation tool to learn required learning standards in your content area: For an A grade provide an idea that reaches a Level of Technology Implementation of 4 or above. Remember higher levels (4-6) require that students assume adult/professional roles; engage in higher-order thinking; and use technology create/publish original content for their classmates and/or others beyond their school/classroom. The learning activities and products should be engaging and meaningful to the students and to others who will view/use/benefit from students work. Review your handouts on Engaged Learning, Authenticity, and LoTi. Grade Level: 2 Content Area: Language Arts Content Standards Addressed (See https://www.georgiastandards.org/standards/Pages/BrowseStandards/GPS_by_Grade_Level_K8.aspx ): ELACC2RF3: Know and apply grade-level phonics ad word analysis in decoding words. ELACC2RI4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area. ISTE Student Technology Standards Addressed (See https://www.iste.org/standards/standards-for-students or textbook): ISTE-NETS 4B: Plan or manage activities to develop a solution or complete a problem. ISTE-NETS 6A: Understand and use technology systems. ISTE NETS-S Standard 1B- Create original works as means of personal or group expression. Brief Description of Learning Experience: What learning standards will be addressed? What will students and teachers do? What products will students create? How will the project be introduced? How long will it take to complete? What audience will use/care about the product(s) students are creating? How broad is this audience? Students will have an opportunity to look at my very own classroom blog and will comment on my posts. Then, the students will be allowed to make their own learning blog that describes a certain Phonics topic (vowel sounds, diagraphs, blends, silent letters, syllables, etc.). Each student will create a blog with at least 2 pages that will teach a lesson/provide important notes for the rest of the class to see. The students will be able to leave comments on the pages and learn together (comments will be moderated through the teacher first). I will give the students a weekend to create their own Phonics Blog and we will continue to develop and add on to their blog through the week in the computer lab. Indicators of Engaged Learning Addressed: The learning tasks are student-directed because each student will create their own blog and write about the notes they find most important in Phonics. They are explorers in this lesson because they have to research and use Edublog as a learning tool. Importance of technology: Why is using a website-creation tool critical to the project? Could the project be completed without this technology? What would be lost without using it? What other types of technology, if any, are going to be used in the learning experience? Although this project could be done using another technological tool, Edublog allows this to be a fun activity for the students to record their knowledge on Phonics. They will get to create a decorative format and interesting design that gets them motivated to make the blog outstanding. Not only that, but through Edublog, the students will get to view each others blogs and leave comments on their pages. Only the students in our class and I will be able to see and leave these comments, which will boost the learning experience. Inspiration (optional): If you used existing example as a model for your project (whether in part or whole), include the URL(s) so we can visit. Explain what concepts you borrowed from others. The link to my class blog is http://rebeccalindsey.edublogs.org. This is an example of an Edublog and is my classroom blog. The students will be using this layout to create a learning tool for each other. I borrowed some ideas on what to post from other teachers blogs, and I loved the idea of having homework and note reminders online for the parents/students. Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Briefly discuss some possible issues surrounding Internet safety and student privacy that could arise while implementing this learning experience and explain how you would (1) minimize risks to students/yourself; (2) alleviate any fears by parents/administrators, and (3) follow common Internet Safety/Acceptable Use Policies. Unfortunately, it can be dangerous to freely surf the web. To keep the dangers down to zero, there will be controls on the computers that block unfamiliar websites. In order to keep the students safe, the blogs will be completely private and will only be able to be viewed by those in my class. Students in the class can post comments only, and I must approve them before they can be posted. Before assigning this project, I will send a parent permission slip home so that the parents are aware their students will be creating a private online blog. If I want to post pictures of the class on my blog, I will send a permission slip home as well that allows parents to sign off on their child being photographed.
