The Use of Social Media in Education

Social media has been widely used in recently. People use social media to
communicate with one another for many purposes. Some people love to share pictures
and comments on other people’s posts on Twitter and Facebook (present an image of
Twitter and/or Facebook here), while some prefer social media platforms for
professional uses (present an image of LinkedIn here). Then, have you ever wondered
about the use of social media in education? (dramatic question)

II. Statistics (62 seconds in total) (continue to play soundtrack no.1)


Let’s first talk about some statistics!
In 2016, a survey of 1,000 K-8 educators conducted by FrontRow Education reveals
surprising results about social media use: “One in five teachers use social media on a
monthly or more frequent basis to communicate with students or parents, with Google +
the most widely used platform.” (23 seconds) (present an image of Google+)
Do you often use Facebook? Do you think that Facebook is mostly used by teachers? In
fact, “Pinterest has the largest correlation between professional and personal use;

1. YouTube (15 seconds)


YouTube - the popular site for video-sharing, but can you use YouTube in teaching?
Sure! (pause 2 seconds) (present an image of YouTube logo)
“Use YouTube for your students to host a show or a podcast where students share their
work.” (present an image of a podcast hosted by students)

2. Blogs (12 seconds)


Edublogs, Kidblog, Edmodo, and other blogs like will let you use social media
competencies and writing techniques. (present an image of either Edublogs, or Kidblog,
or Edmodo)

3. Twitter (10 seconds)


In the mood of using mainstream social media? Some teachers are even doing "tweets"
on post-it notes as exit tickets. (present an image of "tweets" on post-it notes)

4. Skype (25 seconds)


Skype, a social media site that is also a video conferencing tool. You can let students
“to connect with field experts on relating content to the world outside of school. Experts
are more likely to participate in mentoring and sharing their knowledge when they save
time by not having to travel to the school.” (present an image of Skype)

The use of social media in education has been growing day by day; as a result, the
integration of social media can be a great method that boosts teaching and learning.
