ACTION Ensure that all doors and openings open to decks and accommodation are secured from the inside. Use as much deck light as the safe navigation of the vessel permits in particular around the accommodation and stern as the pirates often close in on the quarter and board using lines and hooks. Use extra watchkeepers equipped with walkie-talkies for internal communications and VHF sets in order to communicate with shore based authorities. If a pirate attack is anticipated sound the general alarm in order to prepare the crew. Use loudhailers to warn suspicious boats that the authorities have been informed. If a loudhailer is not available use the ship's whistle to attract attention. Use fire hoses or even hot water if possible to deter unauthorised boarders over the ship's side. NOTE: IF AN ACT OF PIRACY OCCURS DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RESIST OR STRUGGLE AS THE RESULT CAN BE FATAL AND THE SAFETY OF THE VESSEL MAY BE JEOPARDISED.
