Harriet Tubman an American Bondwoman who escaped from slavery in the south to become a leading abolitionist before the American Civil War. She was born in Maryland in 1820. Harriet Tubman escaped from slavery in 1849, fleeing to Philadelphia. She had led more than 300 other slaves to the North and to Canada to their freedom. During the Civil War, Tubman served with the U.S. Army in South Carolina as a nurse, scout, spy and soldier. In 1844, Harriet married a free black man named John Tubman In 1870, Harriet married Nelson Davis, who she had met at a South Carolina army base. Harriet Tubmans real name is Araminta. In early 1859, abolitionist U.S. Senator William H. Seward sold Tubman a small piece of land on the outskirts of Auburn, New York for US $1,200. Harriets father, Ben, had purchased Rit, her mother, in 1855 from Eliza Bruduss for 20 dollars.
