Virtualization: Virtual Disk

Transcript
Were using the vSphere client from VMware to connect to a physical machine where we've installed VMware ESX server. We've also created a sample virtual machine to demonstrate virtual disk. Virtual machines access their resources from the physical machine through a hypervisor. hats the virtuali!ation layer that takes the physical resources of the host machine and presents them to the virtual machines. When it comes to virtual disk what the hypervisor is doing is its taking the physical disk on the host machine" in this case a #$% gig disk partition" and its carving it up virtually and presenting it out to the virtual machines. he virtual machine that we've created here we've allocated a %& gig disk to that virtual machine. 'f we right(click on the Datastore and select Browse Datastore and get a )etter idea of how the virtual machine actually accesses the virtual disk file. o the virtual machine the disk appears like any physical disk would" )ut in reality it's simply a disk file. So here we see a file with the e*tension vdmk" which is our virtual disk" we can see here that the si!e is %& gig. o further demonstrate let's add another virtual disk to this virtual machine. +rom the Commands section click on Edit Settings, a virtual machine property window will appear. +rom the Hardware ta) we can see that the original virtual disk appears here as %& gig. 'f we select the Add )utton we can choose another hard disk to add to our virtual machine. he type of hard disk is a new virtual disk" we click Next" we can choose how large we want the disk file to )e. 'n this case well create a disk of #% giga)ytes and as far as the location goes well store it with the virtual machine. So" in this case well see a new virtual machine disk file appear within the VM folder. +or advanced options well leave it as default and then inis!" -lick #$ and once that configuration is complete" again well go right(click on the data store name" Browse Datastore and when we open up our VM folder well now see that our new virtual disk file has )een added. So" again virtual disks are created at the virtual machine level theyre presented to the virtual machine )y the hypervisor and they appear to the virtual machine as a physical disk.
