Diagnostic Test

The Diagnostic Test will be based on material students must have already mastered in order to fully understand the content that will be learned with this project. The Diagnostic Test will help me assess students strengths and weaknesses and will help me guide students through their weaknesses. Students will break off into groups to create a K -W-L Chart to help them categorize the information they already know, the information they want to know, and the information they will have learned. The main purpose of having this chart is to help the students (and me) monitor their levels of learning.

K-W-L Chart (K, W, L)

Students will understand how imperative it is to know how random variables are defined and what the defining characteristics are. The first vocabulary test will assess students basic understanding of the new vocabulary words that will be introduced and the second will assess the students deeper understanding of each word. For Vocabulary Test (1 & 2) example, students will be tested on basic understandings of the two types of random variables and expected values and variances in the first vocabulary test. The second test will be based on the application of each random variable, how to compute the expected values and variances, and in what scenarios each would be most useful. Students in their respective K-W-L Chart groups will create five questions about information they think they should know by now. The questions they create will be put into a box/bag and the questions will be read aloud (by me) for each group to answer on a sheet of paper. After I have asked 10 -12 questions, I will reread each question to have each group give their answer verbally to the class. The purpose of this activity is to have students think about the information they should know. Given that these questions are student -made, students will also be able to assess their classmates understanding and compare it to their own understanding. After the students have gathered data and research for their project, each group will present their findings (PowerPoint-style). The goal is to get the students more comfortable with talking about their project in front of an audience and to get their peers interested in their research project and have them to want to learn more about their research project. After the groups have presented their data and research, their peers will give anonymous constructive critiques of the presentations based on: 1) organization, 2) level of interest, 3) preparation, 4) and presentation. Before each group receives their peer critiques, students will assess and critique themselves on how well or poorly they were based on: 1) organization, 2) level of interest, 3) preparation, 4) and presentation. Afterward, they will compare their self-assessment with their peer critiques to see which areas they could strengthen. I will announce to the students that they will have a Jeopardy game at the end of the project. Similar to the Student-to-Student quiz, students (individually) will create two Jeopardy-worthy questions (and answers) that I will incorporate into the game. The purpose of this assignment is so that students will create thought-provoking questions that should take a deep level of understanding in order to answer. Students will participate in a game of Jeopardy as a fun, end -of-the-lesson, educational treat! The winner of the game will be presented with bonus points on their research project. As a standard way of assessing each students understanding of the material covered, the unit test will be a comprehensive assessment of understanding of vocabulary words and concepts that should have been learned . Students will write a paper/lab report about their research in APA format. The goal is assess students in their professionalism as they conducted their research and if they are able to interpret their results to a larger audience.
