MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for three days, then the water will flow from the vinegar through the membrane into the egg. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to and area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. When vinegar and calcium carbonate come into contact the vinegar dissolves the eggshell. Vinegar is made up of 95% water and eggs are made up of 74% so then the Vinegar will flow into the egg because vinegar has a higher concentration of water. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 150 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 13.5 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) Without 250 With 300 OBSERVATIONS 50ml displacement

CONCLUSION In this lab we examined osmosis the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to and area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. Over 4 days we watched to see if the vinegar (weak acid) would cross through the selectively permeable membrane. Because vinegar is made up of 95% water and eggs are made up of 74% water the vinegar moved through the selectively permeable membrane because it had a higher concentration. For example the egg expanded 2.5 cm over the 4 days. This shows that the water molecules did move through the egg. The classs average expansion was 2.7 cm. My hypothesis was 100% correct the whole time. ANALYSIS 1) The reasoning for that the egg shell (calcium carbonate to dissolve was because vinegar is made up of 95% water and there is 74% water in an egg. Because vinegar has a higher concentration of water the vinegar will flow into the egg causing the shell to dissolve.

2) In period 7 groups 3s egg had an expansion of 4.5 cm over the 4-day period compared to group 7s egg that only expanded 1.1 cm. The difference between these two eggs was 3.5 cm. The rate of group 3s egg was 1.125 cm a day and group 7s expansion rate was 0.275 cm a day. These two groups may have gotten different results due to differences in setting up the two labs. For instance there may have been different amounts of vinegar in the two jars. Also the two eggs could have been different sizes affecting the expansion rate. 3) Water is a must have for cells. For example water keeps cells properly functioning and allows the cells to dilute. Also they help keep the cells shape and it causes chemical reactions.
