History

Invented Invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, an instructor at the YMCA Training
School in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Rules

A peach basket and soccer ball were first used as the equipment. Five players on the court for each team at all times. Two points are awarded for baskets inside the three point arch, three for shots from outside the line. Free throws are taken from the free throw line are worth one point each and occur after a foul or violation. The game starts with a jump-ball or tip-off at center court between one player from each team. If team A touches the ball last before it goes out of bounds, the possession is awarded to team B who must inbound the ball by passing it from the sideline.

Violations/Fouls Traveling: a player with the ball takes more than 2 steps after picking up their dribble, or moves their pivot foot when in possession of the ball. Foul: occurs when a player, regardless if on offense or defense, strikes another player in one of a number of ways. Double dribble: if a player dribbles the ball with two hands at one time, or picks up their dribble then begins dribbling again. Offense/Defense Zone Defense: defensive strategy in which each player guards an area on the court. Man to Man Defense: defensive strategy in which each player guards one player from the other team. Screen/pick and roll: an offensive player without the ball stands still next to a teammates defender to block them from guarding them as the offensive player moves past them on the court.
