Askell High School Band Programs ___________________________________________

Welcome to the Askell High School Band Program! This letter has been sent to introduce you to our program and to explain to you what we do. The Askell Band Program consists of the Askell Aztec Marching Band, the Aztec Avenger Pep Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Symphony, the Swingin Aztec Jazz band, two Percussion Ensembles and a Steel Band. These programs meet regularly throughout the year Marching Band meets only in the fall, with the concert ensembles meeting year round. Our mission is not only to play quality music at the highest possible level, but also to take students and help shape them into outstanding people during their time with us. This is achieved through daily rehearsals, lessons, and weekly sectionals, as well as student leadership from within the various performing groups. Students will learn to not only play their instrument well, but they will also have a working understanding of music by participating in these ensembles. The band also serves as a community figure, playing at many events (parades, store openings, corporate parties, pep rallies, school functions, March of Dimes walks, etc.) Recently, the Askell Band has received numerous honors: Askell Aztec Marching Band: BOA Grand National Semi-Finalist 2005-2011 Wind Symphony was selected to play at Midwest this coming December Swingin Aztecs were been selected as one of 20 high school groups to participate in an international competition in Spain last summer, placing in the top three groups in attendance Percussion Ensemble has performed at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in 2008 and 2011

By joining this prestigious organization, you are continuing a legacy of excellence that has been established by those who have come before you, and will be continued by those after. However the only way we can all continue this is up to you, the students. You will determine what your part in our legacy is by your hard work, determination, and commitment. I am extremely excited about what this year holds in store, and would like to be the first to welcome you to our family!

Sincerely,

Christopher R. Brophy Director of Bands Askell High School
