Information for Summer Term Year 1

Welcome back! Please find below information with regards to routines and
learning for the Summer term. We hope this will be helpful.
Please make sure that children have a coat in school for playtimes. We will
also be going on local walks to find out about forces, habitats and all
things BIG! So a coat and suitable shoes are important.
P.E: This takes place on Monday afternoons and children are required to
have shorts, t-shirts and trainers/daps in school as we need to prepare
for Sports Day.
Swimming: Swimming will take place during this term. We will start our
swimming sessions on Friday 9th May. Please ensure your child has
appropriate swim wear, a swimming hat and a towel. Please make sure
that on both days your child is not wearing earrings as they can cause
safety issues. Thank-you.
Reading Diary: This should be in school every-day. Guided reading will
take place on a daily basis and children will be able to change their books
during this time. Please continue to listen to your child read at home and
remember to comment in their reading diary as this has been very useful.
Each child will continue to take home flashcards for letter sounds and key
words. These need to be practised as often as possible, as this has
proved beneficial in supporting reading and writing. It will also benefit the
forthcoming Phonics Screening tests which will be during the week
beginning 16
th
June. Please ensure your child is in school this week.
Home Activities: These will be given on a Wednesday, so please make
sure that childrens red books are in school for Tuesday with completed
homework. Home activities will again alternate between maths and topic
based tasks. Reading and letters and sounds activities should also take
place each evening, where possible.
Topic theme for this term: BIG
We will be exploring all things BIG! We intend on covering large buildings,
large animals, large countries and stories with Big associated with them
such as; Millies Marvellous Hat, The Enormous Turnip and the BFG. We
will be learning lots about dinosaurs and turning your child into mini
archaeologists. It should be a great term and we are excited just as much
as the children are. All children will have an input on their learning, talking
about what they would like to find out. Please make sure that if children
bring in items to show they are topic focused.

We look forward to an enjoyable Summer Term!

Yours sincerely
