Concrete slab resting over steel beam with

appropriate connection between them to

avoid slip.
Concrete slab+steel beam=composite beam
Action is similar to that of Tee beam
Effective utilization of materials
More economical steel section
Larger stiffness-less deflection
Fast track construction-prefabricated
elements
Improved fire resistance-encased steel
sections

Shear connection-Strength and stiffness of
the system is improved.
Shear force at the interface is app. 8 times
the total load carried by the beam-shear
connectors are essential.

Functions of shear connectors:
1. Transmit longitudinal shear along interface
2. Prevent separation of steel beam and
concrete slab.

Types of shear connectors
1. Rigid type:
very stiff-sustain only small
deformation-derive resistance thro bearing
pressure of concrete-fail by crushing of
concrete-short bars, angles, T sections.
2. Flexible type:
welded to flange of steel beam-
derive resistance thro bending-undergo
large deformation-headed studs, channels
Bond or anchorage type
derive resistance thro bond &
anchorage action.

Sketch: Pg-9 IS18384-1985

Bond at interface should be prevented by
greasing the flanges
Rate of increase of load should be uniform
such that collapse load is not reached in 10
minutes
The thickness of slab and detailing of rft
should be as in fig 2
At the time of testing the characteristic
strength of concrete should not exceed the
characteristic strength of beam for which the
test is designed
A minimum of 3 tests should be made &
design values should be as 67% of the lowest
ultimate capacity
