    PLC inputs and outputs can be either signal, DC, or relay based. Signal inputs accept multiple sinking inputs while DC control outputs operate from 6-27VDC at 1A per output. Relay outputs can handle higher currents and voltages but are slower than DC outputs. Both DC and relay outputs require protection from inductive transients. AC outputs use triacs to switch on and off at zero voltage points, while AC inputs have voltage dividers and filters in front of DC inputs. Position sensing can be done mechanically using microswitches, optically using LEDs and photodiodes in transmissive or reflective setups, or magnetically.
