&he su$$er internshi( (rogra$ can best be described as an atte$(t to institutionaliAe
efforts to bridge the ga( between the (rofessional world and the acade$ic institutions.
;ntire effort in su$$er internshi( is in ter$s of e<tending the (rogra$ of education and
e4aluation beyond the classroo$ of a uni4ersity or institution. &he su$$er internshi( is of
/!0 wee.s8 duration and is i$(le$ented during the su$$er after the third year of the "
year =.&ech. (rogra$. &he su$$er internshi( (rogra$ is e<(osure oriented and ai$s at
initiating and orienting the students to the (rofessional world. +uring the (rocess it
(ro4ides an o((ortunity for students to satisfy their in@uisiti4eness. &his circu$stance
e<(oses the$ to new analytical and technical s.ills to co$$unicate with and to see.
infor$ation fro$ the industry (rofessionals. 6fter they ha4e been enriched with this .ind

In order to achie4e these ob:ecti4es' a set of guidelines for conducting su$$er internshi(
(rogra$ and assessing the students8 (erfor$ance at 4arious organiAations has been gi4en.
&hese guidelines are (re(ared within the broad fra$e wor. of acade$ic regulations
a((licable at 6%;.

7or su$$er internshi(' a student registers for the course Dsummer !"ter"s:!$@. &he
registration ta.es (lace at the institute :ust after or during the ;nd!&er$ e<a$inations of
the /&C %;M;%&;R. 3lease refer to the guidelines for registration gi4en se(arately.
&he students should reach the su$$er training organiAation on the first day of the start of
the su$$er internshi( (rogra$. &he #R# should ha4e co$(lete infor$ation of the
students of 6%; and the organiAations where they are re@uired to (ursue the su$$er
internshi(. &his infor$ation should be furnished on a (rescribed 3erfor$a. It is $andatory
that all students register with #R# as (er the date decided or before the students lea4e the
ca$(us for su$$er training.

&he orientation (rogra$ is in ter$s of .now!your!organiAation for su$$er Internshi(. It is
suggested that (rior to :oining the su$$er training the student should beco$e fa$iliar
with the organiAation in all res(ects li.e historical de4elo($ents' and future e<(ansion
(rogra$s of the organiAation by referring to 4arious annual re(orts' $anuals etc. &he
student should beco$e fa$iliar with the organiAation structure' (rocesses in4ol4ed by
4isiting 4arious de(art$ents' sho( floors' or interacting with industry guide other
$e$bers of the de(art$ents' attending orientation lectures by the organiAational e<(erts. It
is a good idea for the faculty guide to conduct a @uiA and test as well as as. the students to
sub$it an interi$ re(ort before the students :oin their su$$er training organiAation.

6fter the co$(letion of the orientation (rogra$' de(ending on the student8s owns interest
and the o((ortunities a4ailable in the organiAation' a student $ay choose a (articular
de(art$ent or acti4ity or function or an ongoing (ro:ect within the organiAation. &his $ay
be later con4erted into an o(en!ended (ro:ect or assign$ent. &he strength of the internshi(
(rogra$ and the latent abilities of the students can be effecti4ely incor(orated into the

If there are s(ecific areas of general interest to the students' which can hel(' in their
educational (rocess' it is good to arrange ga( lectures for the$' with the hel( of the
organiAational e<(erts' these lectures co4ering different areas can be arranged at different
ti$e inter4als of the internshi(. &he faculty $ay chal. out (de(ending on the students8
needs) the detailed (rogra$ in this regard after identifying and consulting 4arious
(rofessional e<(erts in the organiAation. It is good idea to conduct @uiAAes and grou(
discussions on the basis of these ga( lectures.
1.3 Atte"%"+e
&he students are re@uired to follow the ti$ings of the organiAation and to attend to the
wor. daily e<ce(t on holidays that are a((licable to the organiAation. &hey should obser4e
all the rules and regulations' which are a((licable to the e$(loyees of the organiAation.

&he regular (eriodic interaction of the su$$er internshi( guide with the students is
necessary. &his interaction hel(s in continuous $onitoring and guiding the students in

the students about their (erfor$ance and (rogress in the (ro:ect and assign$ent tas.

(rofessional e<(ert (Industry *uide) .now about the (rogress of the (ro:ects and
assign$ents. &he faculty $ay in4ite the e<(ert(s) to se$inars' grou( discussions etc. 6t
the end of the internshi(' the faculty see.s the industry guide8s critical co$$ents on
re(orts sub$itted by the students with a 4iew to recei4ing the $uch!needed feedbac. on

&he students are re@uired to interact with the (rofessional e<(erts (eriodically. &hese
interactions hel( the students in letting the e<(erts .now about their (rogress in the
assign$ent and also to get the directions and instructions for further study in regard to the
assign$ent. In these $eetings the students $ay clarify hisher doubts and discuss hisher
assign$ent for better understanding and wor.ing on the assign$ent. -hen the

industry guide sends the feedbac. about su$$er training (erfor$ance on last day of the
su$$er training of the student. &he feedbac. to be sent to #R# de(art$ent.

&he I"ter"s:!$ Re$ort is the research re(ort that the student has to (re(are on the (ro:ect
assigned by the organiAation. (Incase a student is not assigned a s(ecific research (ro:ect in
the organiAation' heshe has to select any one as(ect of the organiAation and (re(are a
research re(ort on it). &he layout of the re(ort should be as (er the standard layout
(rescribed by the organiAation wherein the student underta.es the Internshi(. In case' there
is no layout (rescribed by the organiAation the following co$(onents should be included
in the re(ort?

su$$er internshi( e4aluation is the challenge of e4aluating an indi4idual8s (erfor$ance

should get his due credit in ter$s of his total contribution to the collecti4e effort. In 4iew
of this' there is no basis for gi4ing the sa$e $ar.s to each of the grou( $e$bers for their

1bser4ation in this conte<t' is a channel for the e4aluation of student (erfor$ance at the
internshi( organiAation by the faculty on the basis of their day!to!day interaction with the
faculty and the organiAation (ersonnel' indeed. It is one of the best $ethods of continuous
e4aluation. Cowe4er' care should be ta.en to see that obser4ations are related so$e way
with the 4arious facets of internshi( (rogra$. &he $ar.s allocated for this continuous
e4aluation is gi4en at the end of the (rogra$.

&he diary $aintained by a student enables the faulty to :udge the (oints $entioned earlier.
&his also (ro4ides a wonderful o((ortunity for the faculty to study and e4aluate the
student8s ability to collect and e$(loy infor$ation analysis techni@ues. -riting a diary has
to be (eriodical' (referably a daily affair. =oth the faculty and student should understand
the (hiloso(hy behind recording in a diary. It is an atte$(t to culti4ate the habit of
docu$entation and to encourage hi$her to search for details. It $ay include the students
own thought (rocesses and reasoning abilities. &he faculty $e$ber should chec. and sign
the diary (eriodically.

&he ai$ of these e4aluation instru$ents is not only to e4aluate students for 4arious
characteristics as $entioned earlier but also to i$(art education and train the$ to i$(ro4e
u(on their deficiencies in those characteristics. In order to achie4e this ob:ecti4e' the
faculty should tell students' within 2 to 3 days of holding a co$(onent of e4aluation the
$ar.s obtained' the students8 good (oints and also their deficiencies. Ce%he should also
tell the$ the ways to i$(ro4e u(on their (erfor$ance.

6t the end of internshi( (rogra$ when all the $ar.s obtained by a student on 4arious
e4aluation instru$ents described abo4e are added. It will gi4e the total $ar.s earned by
the student out of 100 $ar.s. If $ore than one faculty $e$ber is in4ol4ed in e4aluation'
the faculty guide is e<(ected to consult his colleagues and the e4aluation should be done
through collecti4e effort. ;4en though fro$ ti$e to ti$e the faculty $ay be ta.ing hel(
fro$ e<(erts and consultants' it is to be borne in $ind that the entire res(onsibility of
