Gothic Art

The Nightmare by Henry Fuseli

The leering imp may embody the physical effects of a nightmare, or be an emblem of sexual desire.
Is this picture an allegory, an illustration of a literary source, or something more personal?
Gothic art is part of medieval art that was developed in Northern France out of Romanesque art in
12th century AD, run by the coexisting development of Gothic architecture. It spread to all of
Western Europe, it never over shadowed classical styles in Italy.
In the 14
th
century the Gothic style of art progressed and continued to grow until the late 15
th

century. In many European areas, in particular Germany, Late Gothic art carried on into the 16
th

century, before being known as the Renaissance art. Gothic art in this period included sculpture,
panel painting and stained glass. There were similar changes in architecture from the Roman time
period to the Gothic. Metaphorical art developed at a different rate.
