Contextual Analysis

Assessment and Data Collection:

Pre-Assessment
Most of the information about the student and their knowledge on tablet computing and their
individual learning/teaching styles will conducted prior to student orientation through an e-mail
survey, by phone, or in person at time of registration.

The most essential component of the orientation is the information being provided to students
regarding the use of the tablets, including rules, guidelines, and policies. It is important for to
cover the needs to know material. Timing is limited and proper device training is essential.

Student orientation will take place two weeks before the start of the semester. Information on
facilities and instructional environment will be provided by on same day and will include a
virtual walkthrough of classrooms.

Students are given a checklist as a refresher to familiarize themselves and to be able to identify
technology and its components

Instructor demonstrates key components and identifies common look/feel of software
components prior to hands on applications. Students are given true or false test after the training
to determine how much they know before training.

Students will configure and personalize system for use, and complete common tasks.

Post-Assessment

Students will understand and remember how to preform common tasks on tablet computing and
navigate through LMS.

Direct Test (Formative Evaluation): Students will complete a computer based test of a
combination of short answer and multiple-choice items on tablet to evaluate students knowledge
on tablet computing and LMS. Instructor will use Naiku application to immediately monitor and
get automatic score of students performance on test. Instructor will provide immediate feedback
to students through the application.

Observation and Anecdotal Records (Summative Evaluation): Students will be observed with
hands on exercises to evaluate their knowledge and assist them. Instructor will takes notes
during activities and conduct evaluation at the end of the session. All information collected will
be used to analyze student learning and improve future training.

After-Action-Review (AAR) (Summative Evaluation): Informal AAR will be used to collect
feedback regarding material covered during training. Students will be able to ask questions and
make comments and suggestions. The impact on training after implementation, costs, and
benefits, will determine an intervention to modify, discontinue, or continue table computing and
the training.

Instructor Evaluation Forms (Formative Evaluation/Summative Evaluation): Evaluation forms
will be used for each training session. Information will be gathered to access the effectiveness of
the instructor and to ensure every critical and essential part of the instruction was covered.
Evaluation will be completing on their tablet.

Instructional Context

Intended Outcome

What goals do the students have for attending and completing the technology orientation?

Device training conducted at student orientation and will allow students to learn and
practice using the device. By the end of the training orientation, students will be able to
identify the major components and perform basic functions on the Asus Transformer
Tablet Device.
Students will be provided with knowledge on how to navigate and use the Learning
Management Systems they will be using in their curriculum. They will be able to
demonstrate how to use these mobile applications on their mobile device.
o Bachelor students will be using Blackboard Mobile Learn and
o Master students will use Moodle and Moodle2.
Students will be able to recognize and differentiate between the purpose/functions of
modules on the LMS.
Students will be prepared to effectively complete basic functions on the device and on the
LMS before they start the school semester.

What are the students perceived utility of the new tablet implementation?

Students understand the importance of 21
st
century skills and most students are motivated
and comfortable with the new technology implementation
Students accept their accountability of mastering the content presented in their courses.
The students understand that the use of tablet devices as well as other mobile devices will
impact future classroom pedagogy including teachers teaching and their students
learning and 21
st
century skills.

Continual application of knowledge and skills learned:

Students are provided with training and their knowledge will be improved during their
course completion. Upon completing their program, students will be prepared to use the
technology in their field and will decide what to use, when to use it and how to use it.
Material learning in orientation will be used on a regular basis during their attendance in
their school program both inside and outside of school. Through practice student will
become experts in using the tablet, its operation system, and mobile applications.
Additional resources including Interactive Multimedia Instruction (IMI) and websites are
provided for additional training and as refreshers.
Students will be able to take the tablets home after training to play and experiment for
two weeks before the school semester starts.
Technical support is provided throughout the remainder of their program. Students have
access to technicians contact information and 24hour technical support information.

Schedule and Environment

Technology orientation will take place at different locations and facilities is reserved and
prepared for this event to ensure they are equipped with tables, seats, and proper
technology, including tablets, video projector, and applications needed. Locations
include U of A South at Sierra Vista Campus and U of A South at Science and
Technology Park in Tucson.
Layout of facilities varies depending on location and facility.
Prior to student orientation, technology technicians will inspect all tablets, set-up
Learning Management Systems (LMS) additional applications that may be need, and test
the devices and applications to ensure everything is functioning properly.
The scheduling of the orientation is set up during the weekend on a Saturday from 9:00 to
5:00 to ensure working students can attend. Students are required to arrive promptly.
Session is broken down in segments according to topic of discussion.

" Quiz
o Test Results
o Summary of training
o Training Evaluation
Technical support staff will be at the sites during the orientation to assist with technical
difficulties that may arise.

Activities

Introduction to Asus Transformer: Presentation on the device and its interface. Presenter
will use his or her personal tablet to conduct the presentation and will be projected
through a video projector.
Instructor will also cover rules and guidelines on using the device for educational
purposes.

Instructor will provide feedback. Test results will be available immediately after the quiz.

After-Action-Review-Instructor will go over briefly what has been covered in the training and
provide students will nice to know information. Students will be able to ask questions and
make comments on the activities and material covered.

Instructor Evaluation-Students will complete a short training evaluation to provide feedback on
the effectiveness of the instructor and the training session. Students will also be able to make
suggestions for future training. This evaluation is confidential and students are not required to
include their name.

Anticipated challenges

Some students might already own a tablet device other than the ASUS Transformer. Students
may bring in their tablet a week or two prior to training so that a technician can install the LMS.
They may choose to use their own tablet or the ASUS tablet during training. All students are
required to attend the training session. They will not be able to enroll in the courses on the LMS
since the password to enrollment will only be provided during the session. For those who
already own a tablet and are using a different operating system, they have the option to skip the
customizing portion of the training. All other training is mandatory.
Some students may not be able to attend the given training session at their designated campus. If
they cant make the training they can attend the training at the other location. One training
session will be at Tech Park one week and another training session will be in Sierra Vista on the
second week.
Tablets can be used in and outside of campus. Network connectivity will be an issue if students
use the device outside of campus. Students can use their wireless connection at home or a free
connection at available Wi-Fi spots. Any additional accessories such as dock-keyboard will
need to be purchased by student. Students may choose to purchase and keep the tablet and add
3G connectivity at an additional cost.
Tablets may be lost, stolen, or damaged. If device is lost or stolen student must notify
technology department immediately. In the case of a stolen device, students must also file a
report with the police. Failure to do so will result in full liability of device. If a device is
damaged, student must return it to technology department for repair or replacements.
Some students may dislike using the Tablet. If students feels like the tablet is a learning barrier
he or she should contact the instructor and technology office to offer other alternatives, which
may include other technology devices and/or activities.
