Of Monsters and Men- Little Talks

Concept and Narrative Hybrid

This follows the story of four characters travelling through the harsh conditions of the fictional
world in the music video. They come across another worldly entity, and it becomes another part
of their travelling company, as well as their guardian. They encounter various monsters and the
guardian saves them. The entity then becomes part of the most impressive creature, and the
music video ends with the foursome on the clouds being lifted up towards it. I think the creator
chose to do this to accompany the lyrics talking about trials and tribulations, as well as pulling
the viewer into the fictional universe.

Rebecca Black- Friday
Narrative

This music video features the artist, Rebecca Black,
getting ready for school. After she meets her friends in
the car, it jumps to her at a party with her friends. The
music itself then takes a different direction, and speaks
about the days of the week. After the cartoon phase in this video, it cleverly slowly fades into
her normally. For around 25 seconds, she is not in shot, and the song features the well-known
artist Usher. He raps and sings in a car. It then cuts back to her, but this time she is on stage at
the party singing and it continues like this until the video ends. The narrative and constant
repetition of Friday (as well as it being the title) means that the audience will clearly grasp the
intended narrative. It also makes it catchy.

Coldplay- Magic
Concept

The whole concept of this music video is 1920s magic. This is clearly displayed through the
way that the director makes the music video a short silent film showing the struggles of a
magicians assistant that wants to actually be a magician herself, as well as escape from her
abusive husband and employer. The director immediately builds up tension through the knife
throwing. As the music video progresses, Chris Martin (the other male character, and the lead
singer in Coldplay slowly starts to build up his skills as a magician. As this is going on, the
abuse between the assistant and her husband is shown, and is also being picked up on by
Chris Martins character. The music video ends with her husband being levitated away by the
male lead, and the assistant becoming the magician, and being happy working together.
