Meeting energy requirements of india, the fastest growing and the fourth largest economy in the world, has been one of the important challenges to be addressed. Wind is an unlimited source of renewable and clean energy. Though India has a potential of 49,000 MW of wind power, its energy scenario shows that only 37% (18,192 MW) is being harnessed currently.

To meet this demand Commission for Additional Sources of Energy (CASE), working under the Ministry for Non-conventional Energy Sources (MNES), has set a target of achieving 10% additional grid interactive power from new and renewable energy sources. Wind is an unlimited source of renewable and clean energy. Though India has a potential of 49,000 MW of wind power, its energy scenario shows that only 37% (18,192 MW) is being harnessed currently. Lower capacity (500 kW) wind turbine technology has been appeared to be well established in the country. However, for higher capacity machines the country still dependent on imports. Setting up the required number of wind farms and achieving higher efficiencies are the current challenges to be addressed in this field. This paper, therefore, is aimed at reviewing the current wind turbine technology in India and suggesting measures to improve the efficiency. Keywords: Renewable energy, wind turbines, wind power
