not talk next to because it is Wiitei's Woikshop time.
Teachei says, "Wiiteis, you know lots of ways to get ieauy to
wiite. Sometimes you close youi eyes anu think of an iuea.
Touay I want to teach all of you how to stait an iuea foi wiiting
anu to put that iuea on papei."
Teachei says, "Touay I am going to uo what I've seen some of
you uoing befoie you begin wiiting, anu what I hope all of you
uo. I'm going to close my eyes anu get a stoiy of something I've
uone in my heau."
Teachei closes hei eyes anu shows that she is ueep in thought.
Teachei says, "0kay, I've got it. I'm going to wiite the stoiy
about this weekenu when I coulun't ueciue what I was going to
make foi uinnei. Beie is how it goes."
Teachei says, "I was feeling veiy hungiy. I openeu my fiiuge
anu uiu not see anything that I likeu. I ieally wanteu pizza, so I
ueciueu to call my favoiite pizza place anu oiuei a pizza. When
it was ieauy, I uiove to the pizza place to pick it up. I biought it
back home to eat. It was so cheesy anu uelicious."
Aftei explaining the stoiy, the teachei says, "0kay, now I want
to get the whole stoiy in my illustiations. Fiist I'll uiaw me anu
I'm going to holu my tummy because I'm so hungiy. 0h! I
bettei uiaw the fiiuge because that is wheie I'm going to look
foi foou."
Teachei tuins to the class anu says, "Bo you see how I'm
putting the whole stoiy into my pictuie. Will you all help me
now. Tuin to the peison sitting next to you anu think about
what othei paits of the stoiy I coulu put into my illustiations."
Teachei allows stuuents to tuin anu talk foi a minute oi two.
As stuuents aie talking, teachei is listening in on stuuents'
conveisations with one anothei.

0nce the stuuents have hau a chance to begin woiking, the
teachei confeiences with a few stuuents about theii
illustiations.
She invites these stuuents to tell theii stoiy while iefeiiing to
theii illustiation to make suie they aie incluuing the uetails of
theii stoiy.
Aftei stuuents have hau about 1S-2u minutes to woik on theii
illustiations, teachei invites them back to the caipet with theii
illustiations in theii hanus.

I've put up a pictuie on the Smait Boaiu of one of the
illustiations that the wiitei Fiane Lessac useu when she, like

Teachei asks stuuents if they woulu talk to the peison sitting
next to them to figuie out what is happening in the pictuie on
the Smait Boaiu.
Teachei gives stuuents time to talk about the pictuie with theii
paitnei.
Teachei shows two fingeis to biing stuuents back to the gioup.
Teachei invites a few stuuents to shaie what they talkeu to
theii paitnei about.
Teachei says, "Wiiteis, like all of you, Fiane wiote the stoiy
that goes with hei pictuie. Bei pictuie is about when she went
back to the Caiibbean islanu wheie she was boin. You can look
at the pictuie anu see all those things-the fish, the biius, the
kius fishing, the stieam. That's what wiiteis uo. We put oui
stoiies into oui pictuies anu into oui woius."

theii own pictuies that they biought to the caipet.
Teachei says, "Now, woulu you show the peison besiue you
youi pictuie. Stuuy each othei's pictuies anu tell the stoiy of
youi pictuie just like you tolu the stoiy of Fiane Lessac's
pictuie."
