HOW WE LEARN
INTRODUCTION
Much of our traditional learning experience
leads us to a believe that we learn best by
listening to experts. Fortunately there has been
considerable research into adult learning and this
provides much better understandings of the factors
influencing adult learning.
Training that actively engages an adult in the
learning process achieves significantly greater results
in learner self-awareness, changed behavior, and the
acquisition of new skills.
Stages of Learning
Or, How We Go From the Unknown To the
Known
STAGES OF LEARNING
At Step 1:
You dont know what you dont
know.

In other words you are not aware you have a
learning need. Sometimes referred to as being in a
state of blissful ignorance.
STAGES OF LEARNING
At Step 2:
You know what you dont know.

This is the stage where learning really begins.
It is where we have become aware that we have a lack
of knowledge or skill and that this is preventing (or
may prevent) us from doing or achieving.
STAGES OF LEARNING
At Step 3:
You know what to do and can do it
when you think about it.

At this stage learning is becoming easier.
Often we feel we pretty much know how to do this.
Frequently all we need at this stage is an opportunity
to practice and some positive reinforcement.
STAGES OF LEARNING
At Step 4:
You dont know what you know
and do it without having to think
about it.
This is like riding a bike. You know what you
need to know and can repeat
the performance at will.
