CHAPTER-1
GENERAL INFORMATION
3

>istory o1 =eramic 8iles
It is believed that the (irst clay tiles were produced seven to eight thousand years ago in
the area now known as the 9oly %and. #any sources independently veri(y that the actual
known history o( Tiles @and the known usage o( wall and (loor tile coveringsA can be
traced back as (ar as the (ourth millennium B8 @0--- B8A to "gypt.
In those days* in "gypt* tiles were used to decorate various houses. 8lay bricks were
dried beneath the sun or baked* and the (irst glazes were blue in colour and were made
(rom copper* very eB)uisiteC
!uring that period ceramics were also known to be (ound in #esopotamia. These
ceramics bore decorations* which were white and blue striped and later possessed more
varied patterns and colours. %ater on* in 8hina too* the >reat 8enter o( 8eramic Art* a
(ine* white stoneware with the earliest 8hinese glaze was produced during the ShangD&in
dynasty @,1./D,-.2 B8A.
The usage and the art o( making and decorating ceramic tiles had spread and by 3--
A.!.* decorative tiles had become widely used in 5ersia* Syria* Turkey and across $orth
A(rica. As transport and communication developed* tile usage and its penetration in other
territories increased. Wars and territory takeDovers caused this art to spread even (aster.
The 6omans introduced tile making in Western "urope as they occupied territories. The
%ow 8ountries o( $orthern "urope somehow ac)uired the technology (rom 5ersia* while
the #oors brought A(rican tiles with them when they invaded Iberia @SpainA. It was
aboard the ships o( Spanish con)uistadors that decorative clay tiles (ound their way to the
$ew World* where they were used primarily to decorate the 8hurches o( newly built
missions.
By the end o( the ,.th century* use and manu(acture o( 8eramic Tiles had spread across
Italy and Spain and into the rest o( "urope. Till that time they were mainly used to
decorate the (loors o( 8athedrals and 8hurches. The skill had eventually vanished (rom
4

"urope in the ,?th century (ollowing the re(ormation. But the decorative wall tile art had
survived in Turkey and the #iddle "ast and the !el(t tiles art survived in 9olland. A
(orm o( tile making had also evolved among the natives o( $orth and South America at
some point. The (irst decorative tiles to appear in 8olonial $orth America were imported
(rom $orthern "urope* mainly "ngland the Brits having hijacked the technology (rom the
!utch. The tiles were too eBpensive (or utilitarian purposes in the 8olonies and were
(ound almost eBclusively in the homes o( the wealthy.
Through the centuries* tile decoration was improved upon* as were methods o( tile
manu(acture. :or eBample* during the Islamic period* all methods o( tile decoration were
brought to per(ection in 5ersia. Throughout the known world* in various countries and
cities* 8eramic tile production and decoration reached great heights. The tile mosaics o(
Spain and 5ortugal* the (loor tiles o( 6enaissance Italy* the (aiences o( Antwerp* the
development o( tile iconography in the $etherlands* and the 8eramic tiles o( >ermany
are all prominent landmarks in the history o( 8eramic tile.
In the early days* the tiles were handDmade* each tile was handD(ormed and handDpainted*
thus each was a work o( art in its own right. 8eramic tile was used almost everywhere on
walls* (loors* ceilings* (ireplaces* in murals* and as an eBterior cladding on buildings.
Today 8eramic tile throughout the world is not handDmade or handDpainted (or the most
part. Automated manu(acturing techni)ues are used and the human hand does not enter
into the picture until it is time to install the tile. They are used in an almost in(inite
number o( ways and you dont have to consider yoursel( wealthy to own them. In
commercial buildings* where both beauty and durability are considerations* ceramic tiles
will be (ound* particularly in lobby areas and restrooms.
15

=eramic 8iles Industry in India
8eramic Tiles today have become an integral part o( home improvement. It can make a
huge di((erence to the way your interiors and outdoors look and eBpress. The Indian tile
industry* despite an overall slowdown o( the economy continues to grow at a healthy ,1E
per annum. Investments in the last 1 years have aggregated over 6s. 1--- crores. The
overall size o( the Indian ceramic tile industry is approBimately 6s ,2*--- crore @:&,.A.
The production during .-,,D,. stood at approB. ?-- million s)uare meters.
The Indian tile industry is divided into organized and unorganized sector. The organized
sector comprises o( approBimately ,0 players. The current size o( the organized sector is
about 6s 4*.-- 8rores. The unorganized sector accounts (or nearly ?-E o( the total
industry bearing testimony o( the growth potential o( this sector.
India ranks in the top / list o( countries in terms o( tile production in the world. With
proper planning and better )uality control our eBports @presently insigni(icantA
contribution can signi(icantly increase.
Apart (rom their decorative looks* 8eramic Tiles are primarily hygiene products and that
is how our broad spectrum o( consumers view the product. This is (airly evident (rom its
varied usage (rom bathrooms and kitchens in average Indian households to medical
centers* labs* milk booths* schools* public conveniences* shopping malls and numerous
other centersF which dot our day to day li(e. A ceramic tile is basically a Gutility productG
and that remains our promotional slogan. 5opular housing projects are increasingly
switching over to 8eramic Tiles moving away (rom the traditional use mosaic and even
granite or marble* owing to several (actors viz. ease in laying ability* versatility* low price
and hygiene.
$evertheless* this decorative aspect o( a 8eramic Tiles has (orever been in the (ore(ront.
9eavy churning out o( bolder and color(ul designs by the industry are testament to the
(act that most households regard a ceramic tile as an GadornmentG (or an otherwise Gdrab
lookG o( their ageDold (loorings or an un(urnished wall +verall picture o( the Industry
11

A ceramic tile as a product segment has grown to a sizeable chunk today at
approBimately ?2- #illions S)uare meters production per annum. 9owever* the potential
seems to be great* particularly as the housing sector* retail* IT H B5+ sectors have been
witnessing an unprecedented boom in recent times.
The key drivers (or the ceramic tiles in India are the boom in housing sector coupled by
government policies (uelling strong growth in housing sector. The retail boom in the
Indian economy has also in(luenced the demand (or higher end products. +verall the
bullish growth estimates in the Indian economy has signi(icantly in(luenced the growth o(
the Indian 8eramic tile industry.
The main product segments are the Wall tile* :loor tile* ;itri(ied tile and Industrial tile
segments. The market shares @in value termsA are .-E* ./E 1-E* and 4E respectively
(or Wall* :loor* ;itri(ied* and Industrial tiles. The tiles are available in a wide variety o(
designs* teBtures and sur(ace e((ects. They cater to tastes as varied (rom rustics to
contemporary marble designs in super glossy mirror (inishes.
Both* traditional methods o( manu(acturing @tunnelA and the latest single (ast (iring
methods are deployed in manu(acturing. Some o( the latest trends in manu(acturing
methods can be seen in India.
The industry also enjoys the uni)ue distinction o( being highly indigenous with an
abundance o( raw materials* technical skills* in(rastructural (acilities despite being (airly
capital intensive. A total o( over 1*1-*--- people are employed in the sector. +ut o( this*
1-*--- people are directly employed and 1*--*--- are indirectly associated. The potential
is huge considering the per capita consumption o( ceramic tiles in India.

Roo1 tiles
6oo( tiles are designed mainly to keep out rain* and are traditionally made (rom locally
available materials such as clay or slate. #odern materials such as concrete and plastic
are also used and some clay tiles have a waterproo( glaze. A large number o( shapes @or
Gpro(ilesGA o( roo( tiles have evolved. These includeI
.lat tiles D the simplest type* which are laid in regular overlapping rows. An
eBample o( this is the clayDmade GbeaverDtailG tile @>erman BiberschwanzA*
common in Southern >ermany. :lat roo( tiles are usually made o( clay but also
may be made o( stone* wood* plastic* concrete* or solar cells.
Imbre5 and tegula* an ancient 6oman pattern o( curved and (lat tiles that make
rain channels on a roo(.
Roman tiles D (lat in the middle* with a concave curve at one end at a conveB
curve at the other* to allow interlocking.
Pantiles D with an SDshaped pro(ile* allowing adjacent tiles to interlock. These
result in a ridged pattern resembling a ploughed (ield. An eBample o( this is the
Gdouble 6omanG tile* dating (rom the late ,3th century in "ngland and 7SA.
1/

!ission or barrel tiles are semiDcylindrical tiles laid in alternating columns o(
conveB and concave tiles. +riginally they were made by (orming clay around a
curved sur(ace* o(ten a log or the makerJs thigh. Today barrel tiles are massD
produced (rom clay* metal* concrete or plastic.
Interlocking roo1 tiles are similar to pantile with side and top locking to improve
protection (rom water and wind.
Ante1i5esI vertical blocks which terminate the covering tiles o( a tiled roo(.
6oo( tiles are JhungJ (rom the (ramework o( a roo( by (iBing them with nails. The tiles are
usually hung in parallel rows* with each row overlapping the row below it to eBclude
rainwater and to cover the nails that hold the row below. There are also roo( tiles (or
special positions* particularly where the planes o( the several pitches meet. They include
ridge* hip and valley tiles. These can either be bedded and pointed in cement mortar or
mechanically (iBed.
Similarly to roo( tiling* tiling has been used to provide a protective weather envelope to
the sides o( timber (rame buildings. These are hung on laths nailed to wall timbers* with
tiles specially moulded to cover corners and jambs. +(ten these tiles are shaped at the
eBposed end to give a decorative e((ect. Another (orm o( this is the soDcalled
mathematical tile* which was hung on laths* nailed and then grouted. This (orm o( tiling
gives an imitation o( brickwork and was developed to give the appearance o( brick* but
avoided the Brick TaBes o( the ,2th century.

6oman roo( tile (ragment @42mm wide by 34mm highA (ound in &ork* 7=* with the
impression o( a kittenJs paw.
:ired roo( tiles are (ound as early as the /rd millennium B8 in the "arly 9elladic House
of the tiles in %erna* >reece.

!ebris (ound at the site contained thousands o( terracotta
tiles having (allen (rom the roo(.
KL
In the #ycenaean period* roo(s tiles are documented (or
>la and #idea.
The earliest (inds o( roo( tiles in archaic >reece are documented (rom a very restricted
area around 8orinth @>reeceA* where (ired tiles began to replace thatched roo(s at two
temples o( Apollo and 5oseidon between 4--D?1- B8.Spreading rapidly* roo( tiles were
within (i(ty years in evidence (or a large number o( sites around the "astern
#editerranean* including #ainland >reece* Western Asia #inor* Southern and 8entral
Italy. "arly roo( tiles showed an SDshape* with the pan and cover tile (orming one piece.
They were rather bulky a((airs* weighing around /- kg apiece
.
Being more eBpensive and
labourDintensive to produce than thatch* their introduction has been eBplained by their
greatly enhanced (ire resistance which gave desired protection to the costly temples.
The spread o( the roo( tile techni)ue has to be viewed in connection with the
simultaneous rise o( monumental architecture in ancient >reece. +nly the newlyD
appearing stone walls* which were replacing the earlier mudbrick and wood walls* were
strong enough to support the weight o( a tiled roo(. As a sideDe((ect* it has been assumed
that the new stone and tile construction also ushered in the end o( J8hinese roo(J
11

@KnickdachA construction in >reek architecture* as they made the need (or an eBtended
roo( as rain protection (or the mudbrick walls obsolete.
5roduction o( dutch roo( tiles started in the ,0th century when city rulers re)uired the use
o( (ireproo( materials. At the time most houses were made o( wood and had thatch
roo(ing* which would o(ten cause (ires to )uickly spread. To satis(y demand* many small
roo( tile makers began to produce roo( tiles by hand. #any o( these small (actories were
built near rivers where there was a ready source o( clay and cheap transport.
Digital tile
5rinting techni)ues and digital manipulation o( art and photography are used in what is
known as Gcustom tile printingG. !ye sublimation printers* inkjet printers and ceramic
inks and toners permit printing on a variety o( tile types yielding photographicD)uality
reproduction. 7sing digital image capture via scanning or digital cameras* bitmapMraster
images can be prepared in 5hotoshop and other photo editing so(tware programs.
Specialized customDtile printing techni)ues permit trans(er under heat and pressure or the
use o( high temperature kilns to (use the picture to the tile substrate. This has become an
increasingly popular method o( producing custom tile murals (or kitchens* showers* and
commercial decoration in restaurants* hotels* and corporate lobbies
12

0overnment support in =eramic Industry
With the discovery o( huge deposits o( 8hina clay in =utch district* the state government
is hoping to place the ceramic industry in the state on the world map. The government has
set an ambitious target to overtake 8hinese eBports by the end o( .--1

According to preliminary indications* 8hina clay deposits are estimated at over .--
million tones. 9owever* >ujarat #ineral !evelopment 8orporation @>#!8A is
conducting a survey in =utch to estimate the amount o( availability o( the #ineral in the
region.
The government has identi(ied (our clusters in =utch* 6ajkot* #orbi* and #ehsana (or
the development o( the ceramic industry in the state. The clusters are eBpected to be
developed and be operational by the end o( .--?.
The (oreign !irect Investment @:!IA limit in the real estate and property sector* and the
government s thrust on the housing sector through initiatives like the Bharat $irman and
the $ational 7rban 6enewal #ission* under which the government aims to (ocus on ??
selected cities* are set to accelerate the growth o( ceramic industry.
The !uty "ntitlement 5ass Book @!"5BA scheme* under which companies get a ,0 E taB
concession in eBports* is only available to glaze units.
13

5roviding some relie( to the industry* the government o( >ujarat had cut sales taB on the
products (rom ,1E to 2E in the last to last budget.
The government has rationalized the eBcise duty structure to a large eBtent (rom roughly
11E (ew years ago to current ,?E.
In a major breakthrough that is eBpected to have a (ar reaching impact on the ceramic
industry* AhmadabadDbased 8entral >lass H 8eramic 6esearch Institute @8>86IA has
developed a new technology* which is claimed to generate wealth (rom waste material.
This technology converts hard* vitri(ied and dense (ired' ceramic scraps into breakable
and brittle material so that they can be easily ground into (ine powder and then recycled
as raw material (or the ceramic industry. This uses the wastage to create wealth and it also
protects environment (rom scraps o( ceramics.
The ailing ceramic industry* known worldDwide (or the )uality ceramics tiles it produced*
will get gas within 0 months as the state energy and petrochemicals department has
decided to eBpedite the work on laying pipeline* as part o( the proposed stateDwide gas
grid* up to #orbi.

The government hopes that its enterprise* >ujarat State 5etronet %td @>S5%A* which is
responsible (or the gas grid project. By doing research at 8eramic 6esearch Institute in
8alcutta* government has suggested to the manu(acturers that energy cost in ceramic
manu(acturing* which is about .1E o( total cost* can saves by microprocessor based
control system and variable speed drivers. By this way companies can save ,1E o(
manu(acturing cost.
>overnment has established Indian 8ouncil o( 8eramic Tiles and Sanitary ware
@I88TASA. The goal o( this council is To promote sales o( products o( ceramic tiles and
porcelain articles by India in domestic and overseas markets.'
14

Its activities are* to arrange Trade eBhibitions* events* seminars and representation o(
Indian ceramic manu(acturing overseas.
7nder the aegis o( government 8hemical and Allied 5roducts "Bports 5romotion 8ouncil
@8A5"NI%A is actively supporting Indian ceramic companies. #ajor activity o( this
council is to trans(er trade in)uiries (rom overseas to Indian manu(acturers.

The 7a- o1 4emand describes the inverse relationship o( price and the )uantity

Substitution )11ect:
In substitution e((ects* when the price o1 a good or product decreases* the relative price
o( that good makes buyer more eager to buy that good or product.
When the price o1 a good increases* the relative price o( that good makes the buyer less
eager to buy that good or product. The price o( one product is contrasted with the prices
o( other products* thus causing the substitution e((ect. 8onsumers will substitute towards
the cheap or less eBpensive product.
Income )11ect:
Income can be measured in terms o( the services and goods that one can purchase. I( the

What Is Market Demand Analysis
8ompanies use market demand analysis to understand how much consumer demand
eBists (or a product or service. This analysis helps management determine i( they can
success(ully enter a market and generate enough pro(its to advance their business
operations. While several methods o( demand analysis may be used* they usually contain
a review o( the basic components o( an economic market which areI
1. #arket identi(ication
-. Business cycle
.. product niche
/. growth potential
0. competition
!arket Identi1ication
The (irst step o( market analysis is to de(ine and identi(y the speci(ic market to target
with new products or services. 8ompanies will use market surveys or consumer (eedback
to determine their satis(action with current products and services. 8omments indicating
dissatis(action will lead businesses to develop new products or services to meet this
consumer demand. While companies will usually identi(y markets close to their current
product line* new industries may be tested (or business eBpansion possibilities.
11

Business =ycle
+nce a potential market is identi(ied* companies will assess what stage o( the business
cycle the market is in. Three stages eBist in the business cycleI emerging* plateau and
declining. #arkets in the emerging stage indicate higher consumer demand and low
supply o( current products or services. The plateau stage is the breakDeven level o( the
market* where the supply o( goods meets current market demand. !eclining stages
indicate lagging consumer demand (or the goods or services supplied by businesses.
Product 9iche
+nce markets and business cycles are reviewed* companies will develop a product that
meets a speci(ic niche in the market. 5roducts must be di((erentiated (rom others in the
market so they meet a speci(ic need o( consumer demand* creating higher demand (or
their product or service. #any companies will conduct tests in sample markets to
determine which o( their potential product styles is most pre(erred by consumers.
8ompanies will also develop their goods so that competitors cannot easily duplicate their
product.
0ro-th Potential
While every market has an initial level o( consumer demand* specialized products or
goods can create a sense o( use(ulness* which will increase demand. "Bamples o(
specialized products are i5ods or i5hones* which entered the personal electronics market
and increased demand through their perceived use(ulness by consumers. This type o(
demand )uickly increases the demand (or current markets* allowing companies to
increase pro(its through new consumer demand.
=ompetition
An important (actor o( market analysis is determining the number o( competitors and
their current market share. #arkets in the emerging stage o( the business cycle tend to
have (ewer competitors* meaning a higher pro(it margin may be earned by companies.
+nce a market becomes saturated with competing companies and products* (ewer pro(its
1-

are achieved and companies will begin to lose money. As markets enter the declining
business cycle* companies will conduct a new market analysis to (ind more pro(itable
markets.
Sales Promotion
Sales promotion can be described as any action or decision that will promote or help to
promote sales'. Sales promotion means to increase the sales. It is an incentive given to
the customer as well as dealers to increase the sales. It attracts new customers and also
encourage the eBisting customers to buy more.

An open ended )uestion has no (iB alternates to which the answers must
con(orm. The responds answers in his own words and at length he choice.
!ichotomous )uestion is one where the respondent select a pre designed
