Course Overview
English 12 provides a variety of fiction and nonfiction, representing different genres, times, authors, themes, and forms
in literature. Using the writing process, students write essays that demonstrate a connection with writing and speaking.

Required Materials
One 2-pocket folder
One Spiral Notebook Reserved for English ONLYwill be left in the room
Flash drive for student netbook
Pens, pencils, paper
Agenda Book recommended can be purchased at the Harrison bookstore

Official EVSC attendance policy:
Attendance
The Department of Student Services is responsible for attendance in the Corporation. When a student's attendance is
unacceptable, contacts are made with the student and parent. This may include a pre-court.
High School Attendance Rules:
A student is expected to attend school regularly to derive maximum benefits from the instructional program.
Denial of Credit
Each semester a student may be denied credit after the tenth absence of a class. Extensions will be provided to students
who have written medical or dental excuses on file in the attendance office. Notes from doctors, dentists or other health
care providers must be received by the attendance office WITHIN THREE SCHOOL DAYS OF THE DATE THE
STUDENT RETRURNS TO SCHOOL. Notes not received within three days will not be accepted. When a student is
denied credit in all classes, he/she will be recommended for expulsion from school; or if of legal age, will have the
option to withdraw.
High School Absences
All absences will accumulate toward the ten day total with the exception of the following WHEN ACCOMPANIED
BY ACCEPTABLE DOCUMENTATION: (1) personal illness or injury, documented by a doctor or other health
professional's statement, (2) death in immediate family. Out-of-school suspensions are marked absent but do not count
toward the 10 day total. Students are not counted absent for the following WHEN ACCOMPANIED BY
ACCEPTABLE DOCUMENTATION: (1) Serving as a page in the Indiana Legislature, (2) issued a court subpoena,
(3) observance of a religious holiday, (4) school sponsored field trips; or (5) working at the polls on election day.

Harrison Grading Scale:
90-100% A
80-89% B
70-79% C
60-69% D
below 60% F

Assessments and Evaluation:
Students are assessed in a variety of ways essays, other forms of writing, tests, projects,
and individual and group presentations.

Grade Weight:

Daily Work and Homework: 20%
Writing and Projects: 40%
Tests and Quizzes: 40%


Make-up Work: Students are responsible for obtaining information about missed assignments. Students should refer
to the class Weebly site and classmates for information regarding missed assignments. Students may come to me for

further explanation of individual assignments. Students who are absent the day of a test or an in-class writing
assignment will likely have an alternative assessment when they return to class.

Late Work:
All assignments should be turned in on the date due. Late work will be accepted in class until the Friday of the week it
is due with a 10% penalty each day it is late. If you are more than a week late, you will need to make arrangements to
come in to my room during FLEX to make up work.

I will post students who are in danger of not passing each week. You will have until that Friday to turn work in before I
call your parents.

Classroom Expectations: PRIDE

Preparedness ~ Be in the classroom when the bell rings with necessary materials (pencil, paper, netbook, and
completed assignments.
Respect ~Listen and follow directions. Help create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
I ntegrity ~Take responsibility to learn the material and show what you know.
Determination ~Always be attentive and productive. Use time wisely.
Engagement ~Participate by taking notes, asking and answering questions, joining activities, and
completing assignments.


Entering the Room: When the bell rings all students should be seated with all of their necessary materials, their
writing notebook, and whatever texts are needed for the period.

When you are tardy: You should sign in on the tardy log and then go quietly to your seat.

Working independently: Show me that you have attempted to complete the task before asking for help
(brainstorming, attempt the first question, etc.) Then ask a classmate sitting next to you for help. If you need still need
help, raise your hand and wait patiently until I can help you.

Turning in work: All assignments should be turned in to the basket on my desk at the end of the period for daily
assignments and at the beginning of the period for homework.

Taking care of personal needs: If you need to use the restroom and do not want to be counted tardy, please tell me
that youre going and then leave to go before the bell rings. Do NOT ask to go to the restroom during class unless its
an emergency.

End of class/exiting the classroom: 1) Make sure any work that you have completed has been turned into the
appropriate tray. 2) Put your writing notebook in the appropriate drawer. 3) Make sure all papers on/near your desk
have been put away or thrown away. 4) Make sure all classroom books have been put away. 5) Stay in your seat until
the bell rings. 6) Push in your chair before you leave the classroom.

Academic dishonesty, such as cheating or plagiarizing, will not be tolerated and will be dealt with according to school
policy.

An environment of integrity is expected in my classes. This means, you will do the best that you can possibly do on
each task and allow the people around you to do the same. It also means that you will respect both yourself and others
while you are in this classroom.

As young adults, if a verbal warning is given to correct a behavior, students are expected to modify their behavior
accordingly. I will treat you like an adult as long as you behave like one.

Essays ~ Please use MLA format for all formal essays and papers. All typed documents must be written in 12-point
font, Times New Roman style, double-spaced, with one inch margins. Titles must be centered.
Thinkpad Policy
1. Students are expected to bring the netbook to class each day.
2. Students are expected to charge the netbook at home each night. The classroom is not equipped for charging
purposes.
3. Netbooks are to be used for educational purposes only. Chatting, instant messaging, and social networking
are not permissible in the classroom and will result in you losing computer privileges for that period.
4. Video and camera functions are to be used in conjunction with class assignments only.
5. Gaming is considered an off-task behavior and will result in you losing computer privileges for that period.
6. Each Thinkpad is the personal property of the EVSC and the responsibility of an individual student and
should be respected as such.
7. Thinkpad use is at the teachers discretion. Students must put the netbook away if it is not being used for an
activity.
8. Students are expected to use the My Big Campus Network for assignment purposes when asked.
If there is an issue with the network, assignments should be e-mailed to the teacher in order to meet any
deadlines.
9. Information found through internet research must be cited. Failure to credit the source of information will be
considered an act of plagiarism.
10. If at any time the student uses the Thinkpad as a means for disrupting the classroom or distracting other
students she/he will be asked to surrender it to the teacher.

4. Repeated offences will result in a referral to the dean
*The teacher reserves the right to skip steps if deemed appropriate.


*******************Scrapbook Project************************

The scrapbook project will take place during the second semester. All of the above required
writing will be included in this project. We will complete this project in sections throughout the
semester, and these sections will then be compiled into your final product. You will be given a
complete project outline at the beginning of the second semester.
