IP - Ingress Protection Ratings

IP - Ingress Protection rating is used to specify the

environmental protection - electrical enclosure -
of electrical equipment
Ingress Protection (IP) ratings are developed by the European Committee for Electro
Technical Standardization (CENEEC) (NE!" IEC #$%&' (egrees of Protection
Provided by Enclosures ) IP Code)* specifying the environmental protection the enclosure
provides+
The IP rating normally has t,o (or three) numbers-
.+ Protection from solid ob/ects or materials
&+ Protection from li0uids (,ater)
1+ Protection against mechanical impacts (commonly omitted* the third number is
not a part of IEC #$%&')
Example - IP Rating
2ith the IP rating IP %3* % describes the level of protection from solid ob/ects and 3
describes the level of protection from li0uids+
"n 454 can used for one of the digits if there is only one class of protection* i+e+ IP5.
