METHOD STATEMENT

NEW SENATE BUILDING PROJECT

GROUNDING SYSTEM TESTING METHODOLOGY

I. INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE
The purpose of this statement is to detail the step by step procedure for grounding of electrical system.

II. SCOPE
This statement covers all the ground testing of electrical system.

3. Submitted Approved Materials
4. Submitted Approved Shop Drawings
5. Approved Construction Safety Program & Job Hazard Analysis Plan

IV. MATERIALS
1. Testing Equipment

V. PROCEDURE
1. Secure the area where the testing to be conducted must be free from any obstruction, free from any falling
objects.
2. The testing activity shall be conducted by accredited EIM-NCII Electrician and under supervision of
Electrical Engineer to be witnessed by QC Inspector and DPWH. All the said personnel must be present
during testing.
3. Setting up earth resistance or grounding tester.
4. This instrument makes Earth resistance Measurement with fall of potential method which obtains Earth
Resistance “R” by applying AC constant current, “I” between the measurement object “E” (EARTH
ELECTRODE) and “C” (CURRENT ELECTRODE) and finding out the potential difference “V” between
“E” and “P” (POTENTIAL ELECTRODE).
5. Connection of test leads: stick the auxillary earth spikes “P” and “C” into the ground deeply. They should be
aligned at an interval of 5-10 meters from the earth equipment under test.
6. Connect the green lead wire to the earthed equipment under test, yellow wire to the auxiliary earth spike “P”
and the red wire to the auxillary earth spike “C” from terminals “E”, “P” and “C” of the instrument in order.
7. Make sure to stick the auxiliary earth spikes in the moist part of the soil.
8. Pour enough water where the spikes have to be stuck into dry, stony or sandy part of the earth so that the soil
becomes moist.
9. Set the range switch to “ earth voltage” position to check the condition of 1, if the indicator swings earth
voltage exists. Make sure that the voltage is 10V or less. When the display reads more than 10 VOLTS, it may
result in excessive error in earth resistance measurement.
10. Set the range switch to x100Ω position and press the test button. LED remains illuminated during testing.
Turn the range switch to x10Ω and x1Ω when the earth resistance is low. This indicates value of the earth
electrode or equipment under test.
11. Resistance test result of ground rod system shall be maximum of 2 OHMS for building/equipment grounding,
1 OHMS for telecommunications and 5 OHMS for lighning protection.
12. Record the resistance Test and include photos for proper documentation.

VI. HEALTH AND SAFETY PLAN

1. The execution of work will strictly follow the project safety manual.
