4th Grade Math

Course Description:
Welcome to 4th Grade Math! This class introduces students to the
fundamentals of the ve areas of math:
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Number and Operations in Base Ten
Number and Operations- Fractions
Measurement and Data
Geometry
Class Rules:
1. Be respectful to all people and property.
2. Follow instructions the rst time they are gi ven.
3. Follow all school and class rules and policies.

What will my child be learning in math:
Fourth graders will perform mul ti-digi t ari thmetic. They will use large whole
numbers to uently add and subtract and develop uency wi th mul tiplication and
di vision (including quotients wi th remainders). Students will develop an
understanding of fraction equi valence, addi tion and subtraction of fractions (wi th
like denominators) and mul tiplication of fractions by whole numbers. Lastly,
students will classify geometric shapes based on properties (i.e., symmetry, angles,
parallel sides).

Grading:
Grades will be determined using a point system. Grades will be di vided among
the following categories:
classwork, homework and participation
class projects and interacti ve notebook
quizzes and tests

Homework:
The math homework assigned is purposeful and coincides wi th the lessons
we are learning in class. For this reason, missed homework can have a negati ve
impact on your childs understanding and achievement in my class. Please check
your childs reminder binder and my websi te regularly for homework assignments
and due dates.

Late Work:
Late work will be accepted according to school policy. Your child must see me
for missed work. When a student is absent, I will do my best to compile missed
work, but i t is their responsibili ty to get the work and nd out from me what they
have missed. Students are also responsible to turn in any late assignments in a
timely manner. If a student is absent the day of a test or project, they are still
expected to take the test/turn in the project the day they return.
