FIRE INVOLVING

RADIOACTIVE SOURCE

Scenario
The lab technician is conducting a heating
of slurry at the oven near an XRF machine
that has Cs-137. One of his co-worker ask
him to take their break. The lab technician
forgot to turn off the oven until the
temperature rises causing the oven and
the cable collapsed and create a fire.

Procedures on How to Deal with
the Incident
1. Sound fire alarm at the Laboratory.
2. Another sound fire alarm at the DCS
room.
3. Confirm alarm at the area.
4. Announce via paging system that there
is fire detected at the laboratory area.

6. Call Japanese Staff/Foreman about the
incident
7. The Foreman will call the Fire Action
Team and RSHO.
8. Ask the persons in the lab to evacuate
the area and help save lives.


9. Check the situation of the fire and the
RAM source to know how to deal with it.
10. Extinguish the fire, monitor for radiation,
verify source location & set barricades.
11. If the fire is already settled, emergency
response by radiological assessor shall
proceed.
12. Monitor if the source has leakage. (If
theres any, monitor workers for
contamination. )
13. Record doses received and tell those
exposed about the risks and arrange
some treatment.
14. If there is no contamination, clean up the
area before work will resume.
Suggestions
1. Confirm all devices that can cause fire
are turn off before leaving the workplace.
2. Do not leave work unfinished. If you will
leave the work have someone to take
care of.
3. See to it that the device having the RAM
source has proper shielding against fire.
