The department is finalizing the commissioning of a new well and water treatment upgrades by September 14th. Over the next three weeks, extensive testing will be done on the systems. The water quality from the new well is superior so it bypasses some filters, while the old well still needs both disinfection methods. Residents may see temporary discoloration but the water is safe to use, and they should run taps until the water clears if needed.

The department is in the final stages of having the new well and water plant upgrades commissioned from the engineers. We have set a deadline for September 14, 2014 to have all construction and operational deficiencies addressed for the sign-over of the communitys new assets. In addition, we will be planning a ribbon cutting ceremony for the end of September with the Regional Director General for Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC).
Over the next three weeks, extensive calibration and testing will be performed of our systems. As previously communicated, the water quality in the new well is superior and therefore is bypassed from the potassium permanganate greensand filters to the standpipe after chlorination in the treatment system. The old well still needs both disinfection methods before it is distributed to the standpipe. It is the conclusion from our engineers that the greensand filter system is causing the discolouration in the water due over-pressurization within the system. These deficiencies are being addressed immediately.
Residents are encouraged to run their taps until the water is clear in the event that there is any discolouration. The water running through our distribution system is fully treated and is safe to drink and bathe and meets Health Canadas Guidelines for Safe-Drinking Water.
If residents continue to have any concerns, please contact me at sknockwood@shubenacadieband.ca or the office at 902-758-3341 or on my cell at 902-758-0169 and I will arrange a department staff member to perform water quality tests at your residence.
