Many of the gladiators were slaves or prisoners of war.
Roman gladiators entertainment took place at the Coliseum. Gladiators would fight each other or wild animals. Generally, gladiators were condemned criminals. Some volunteered to become gladiators because they would get paid every time they fought. Criminals who had killed/found guilty of murder were sent into combat without armor or weapons. People went to gladiator school to become gladiators. Gladiators would fight 3 times a year and if you were a criminal and you survived 3-5 years you would be grained your freedom. They wore armor in combat, but not the same armor as the Roman army. Women gladiators were called gladiatrix. Gladiatrix was introduced in 200 AD. Thumbs down didnt always mean death for the gladiator or gladiatrix. The battle field was larger than a NFL football field. Elephants was one of the main animals gladiators fought. Some gladiators that had no weapons or armor would run around in circles until the other gladiator would be to tired to fight. The animals the gladiator fought such as lions, elephants and bears were kept under the Coliseum. Another stadium where chariot racing took place was the Hippodrome. Chariots were pulled by 2 4 horses. Sometimes the divers died because of falling off their chariots and getting trampled on by the horses.
