Save Fred!
Pre-Lab Questions:
1. Why is it important to follow an agreed on procedure for a laboratory experiment?
It is important to follow an agreed on procedure for a laboratory experiment because it
prevents things from going wrong.
2. Why is it important to document your procedure, errors you may have made, or
differences in actual outcome vs. expected outcome?
It is important to document everything so we can track what went wrong, what went
right, and how to do things next time.
3. Why do we normally not have food in Chemistry class? (Be specific.)
In chemistry class, we use chemicals that are very dangerous just being in a container but
if it landed in your digestive system it is even more dangerous.
Experimentation:
Purpose - To put Fred in his life preserver and in his boat without using hands to touch him or
killing him.
Procedure - First, bend paper clips in hooks/tweezers. Next, pick up Fred with tweezers. Then,
flip boat with hooks. After, grab life preserver with tweezers. Finally, put Fred in life preserver
and in boat.
Data/Observations - It was quickly seen that paper clip hooks had more use than the tweezers
and it was harder to put Fred in his life preserver than we thought.
Conclusion - In conclusion, Fred was ultimately saved by his assisters (paper clips).
Error Analysis - Our biggest error was initially shaping our paper clips into tweezers and then
later having to reshape them laters.
Post-Lab Questions:
1. Was one of you more a leader and others followed, or did you share the responsibility
for ideas equally? Why did it work that way?
We shared our ideas and the responsibilities equally because we were able to keep
communication well during the experiment.
2. What areas of expertise can you bring to the project? (What are you good at?)
I was able to bring patience, communication skills, and well thought processing to the
project/experiment.
3. How do you feel about conducting laboratory experiments? (They wont all be like
saving Fred)
I feel I will be successful at conducting future experiments as long as I listen to safety
precautions and communicate well with my future partners.
