Benjy Povman
What is paint?
A pigment suspended in a liquid or paste
Used to create colors and shades
Will attach to a surface when dry
First uses date back to ~25,000 BCE
Four main ingredients
Pigment
Resin
Solvent
Additives
Pigments
Control color, gloss
Two main types
Prime pigments
Titanium Dioxide (white)
Chrome Oxide (green)
Iron Oxides (yellow and red)
Extender pigments
Calcium Carbonate
Magnesium Silicate
Barium Sulphate
Resin
Holds pigment particles together and
allows paint to adhere to a surface
Natural resins
Ex. Linseed oil, Soybean oil
Solvent-based resins
Alkyd resins ex. Urethane, Polysiloxane
Acrylic polymers
Ex. Methyl Methacrylate, Butyl Methacrylate
Solvent
Carries the pigments and resins
Wide range of solvents used
Ex. Alcohol, Turpentine, Acetone, H2O

Fun Fact- Paint thinner is comprised of a solvent. When applied, the paint will
dissolve away from the surface.

Additives
Can be added to give the paint a special
quality, such as mold resistance or ease of
brushing
How it all comes together...
Ingredients are measured
Liquids are mixed
Pigments are dissolved into a small
portion of liquids slowly
Certain pigments can clump, in these
cases the solution must be milled, like
wheat
Continued
Remainder of liquids is added (known as
let down)
Sample tested for quality control
Paint is canned, labeled, and shipped
When you use it...
Canned paint remains as a solution
Paint is stirred to remove any clumps
When you apply it to a surface, the solvent
evaporates
Resin and pigment solidify
Voila! Your surface now has a hard coat
of new paint
