TOPIC : LAW OFCONSERVATION OF MOMENTUM STAGE : 14+

CURRICULAR STATEMENT
Pupil develops factual knowledge conceptual knowledge and procedural knowledge of the
concept of law of conservation of momentum and its role in our life through observation, discussion
and experimentation and evaluation by questioning, participation in practical work and group
discussion.
CONTENT ANALYSIS
TERMS: Law of conservation of momentum
FACTS: Two ball having masses m1 and m2 and velocities V1 and V2 collide. If there is no external
force acting on the system; momentum of the system is conserved.
Total momentum before firing and total momentum after firing is zero in the system.
CONCEPTS: If there is no external force acting on a system the total momentum of the system
always be a constant.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Enables the pupil to develop
1. Factual knowledge of law of conservation of momentum by
a) Recalling various situation, their need of conservation of momentum.
b) External force can cause momentum.
c) Recognize the factors affecting momentum.
2. Conceptual knowledge on law of conservation of momentum by
a) Explaining the concept of law of conservation of momentum.
b) Uses the concept of law of conservation of momentum in new or unfamiliar situationsm
3. Procedural knowledge on law of conservation of momentum by
a) Doing activities on which momentum should be conserved.
b) Raising questions on applications of law of conservation of momentum in our life
situations.
4. Metacognition
Metacognitive knowledge on conservation of momentum and its role in our life by
a) Focusing the idea If there is no external unbalanced force acted upon a system, the total
momentum will be conserved.
b) Generating conditions for conserving momentum.
c) Judging how the law of conservation of momentum is useful to us.
5. Different process skills like observing, making operational definitions, inferring, communicating
etc.
6. Attitude towards science
PREREQUISITES
Students are aware about equations of motion, momentum etc.

CLASSROOM INTERACTION PROCEDURE

EXPECTED PUPIL RESPONSE

INTRODUCTION
We have already studied about momentum
and change of momentum through various
situations. Did you ever think what the momentum
of a system is when the external force acting on it
is zero? Let us study about this.

ORIENTATION
Teacher divides the students into groups

PRESENTATION
ACTIVITY-1
Teacher shows an activity that she pass a
nylon thread through five plastic balls in such a
way that they can move freely on the thread. Keep
the thread taut horizontally. The balls are set at the
middle of the thread touching each other. Move a
little backward the ball at one end. Strike it forward
with your finger so as to hit the other balls and ask
them to observe what happens. Then move back
two balls together and strike them to hit others and
ask them to observe.
Discussion Clues
What do you observe when striking by a single
ball?
What do you observe when striking by two balls?
ACTIVITY-2
Teacher shows a video which explains the law of
conservation of momentum in detail.
Physics- Law of Conservation of Linear Momentum_(360p).mp4

The ball at the other end moves away.

Two balls of the other side will move away.

Discussion Clues
What happens to the velocity of the second cart
when the donkey jumped into it?
What did you observe about the motion of the
second cart when the elephant jumped into it?
Will the momentum of the system change?

Teacher discuss about the law of conservation of
momentum and came into conclusion.

CONCEPT TO BE CONSOLIDATED
If there is no external force acting on a
system, the total momentum of the system
always be a constant.

APPLICATION LEVEL EXPERIENCE
An object having mass 100gm and velocity
2m/s, another object having mass 200gm and
velocity 1m/s are moving along same straight line
along same direction and collide each other. After
collision the velocity of the first object changes into
1.67m/s what is the velocity of the second object?

Velocity decreases.

It moves backwards.
Dont know.

Total momentum before collision= m
1
v
1
+m
2
v
2

= 0.01kg x 2m/s + 0.2Kg x 1m/s
=0.4 Kgm/s
Total momentum after collision=0.1 Kg x 1.67m/s
+ 0.2 Kg x v
2

=0.167 Kgm/s + 0.2 x v
2
Kgm/s
According to law of conservation of momentum
0.4 Kgm/s = 0.167 Kgm/s + 0.2 x v
2

v
2
= 0.233/0.2 = 1.17m/s

REVIEW
1) State law of conservation of momentum?
2) Say an example which obey law of conservation of momentum?
3) When will be the total momentum in a system remains constant?
4) When a bullet is fired from a gun which was the total momentum of the system?
5) What is the unit of momentum?
FOLLOWUP ACTIVITY
Give some examples for situations from our daily life where law of conservation of
momentum is applicable.
