THE TEACHING OF SCIENCE

Group Members:

 Galvez, Rosalie O.
 Guyo, Joyce Lyn A.
 Oguing, Dianne R.
 Topacio, Jhezarie May E.

I. Area: Physics
II. Grade Level: Grade 8
III. Topic: Laws of Motion
IV. Performance Standard:
The learner observes road safety as a motorist or a pedestrian.
V. Content Standard:
The learner demonstrates understanding of the Newton’s three laws of
motion: Law of Inertia, Law of Acceleration, and Law of Interaction.
VI. Learning Competency:
The learner:
 Investigates the relationship of the amount of force applied and the
mass of the object to the amount of change in the object’s motion
 Demonstrates the effects of friction on a moving body
 Designs and implements an experiment that will verify Newton’s 3 rd
law of motion
 Relates the laws of motion to bodies in uniform circular motion
VII. Suggested Strategies

 Push That Cart

Instruction:
After the discussion of the Law of Acceleration, students will be
divided into four groups and will perform an activity using a cart.
Each group will be given a cart and objects with different masses to
observe what will happen to the acceleration of the cart.

Materials:
 Cart
 Objects with different masses

Procedures:
a) First, each member will push the cart without object added to
it. Assume that each member exerts different amount of force.
b) Next, a light object will be added to the cart that will be pushed
by each member.
c) Then, object with greater mass will be added to the cart that
the members will push again.
d) Repeat the third step until they added the object with the
greatest mass to the cart.
e) Last, they need to observe what happen to the acceleration of
the cart when different force and different mass is applied.

 What can forces do?

Instruction:
After the discussion they will do an activity. This activity is to
experiment with various things to observe what happens to them
when we push and pull them. Students should understand that solid
things are accelerated by pressure. Ball and balloons may all be
pushed or pulled to change their shape and cause the ball to roll.
Student observed what happened when we applied a force on these
objects.

Materials:
 sponge or piece of foam
 ball
 blown up balloon

Procedures:
a) Work in groups of 2 or 3 as you follow the instructions and
describe the effects of the forces that you are applying.
b) Start with the ball and place it on the ground. Push it towards
your partner. What were you able to cause the ball to do by
pushing it?
c) When one of you pushes the ball to the other, the third person
must give the ball another push at an angle to the direction in
which it is already moving. What were you able to do in the
direction in which the ball was moving?
d) Exert a force in the opposite direction to its movement while it
is already moving. What are you able to cause the ball to do?
e) Exert a force in the same direction to its movement while it is
already moving. What are you able to cause the ball to do?
f) Next, pick up the piece of sponge and twist it. This is also a
type of force which changes the sponge's shape.
g) Press the sponge between both hands.
h) After conducting the experiment ask students what they
observed and what forced they applied.

 Action & Reaction Experiment

Instruction:
At the end of the discussion, the students will form a group and they
will be given a task to present an experiment to demonstrate Newton's
3rd law of motion and explain briefly the significance of the act to the
topic.

Procedures:
a) The students will go on their respective groups and will be
given the right amount of time in order to plan the experiment.
b) The students have freedom of what experiment they want to
perform.
c) At the day of the presentation, each group will be given a
chance to demonstrate their chosen activity and explain in
front of the class.
d) Each group will be graded accordingly based on the criteria or
rubrics given.

 Make It Relate!

Instruction:
After the discussion, students will be divided into four groups. The
teacher will give each of the two groups a specific object that has
uniform circular motion. Then, in front of the class, they will explain
how to apply the law of motion on these objects.

Procedures:
a) First, the students will be divided into four groups.
b) Second, the teacher will assign each of the two groups a
specific object that has uniform circular motion. (Group 1 and
3: Clock, Group 2 and 4: Bicycle)
c) After that, they will relate how these things connected to the
law of motion.
d) Then, they are expected to do the task in 15 minutes.
e) Lastly, after they have finished their group discussion, they will
present their work to the class for explanation.
