Field Trip Chaperone Volunteers

PLEASE make sure you have given Gloria a copy of your drivers license before Friday! We will
be leaving the school at 9:30am. You can either meet at the school a little before 9:30 and follow
the bus OR meet us at Ivy Creek Natural Area around 10:00. When we arrive at Ivy Creek you will
be accompanying a group of students on a nature hike led by an Ivy Creek naturalist.
Reading and Wondering
This week students have been using Post-It Notes to record their thinking as they read their
wonders, connections to other texts or to the world, and other reflections. Good readers are always
thinking about their thinking we call this metacognition. Were practicing metacognition in 3rd
grade by recording our thinking on Post-Its. For homework students will write down two of those
questions their brain asked as they read, starting each question with I wonder... There are some
ideas on the Homework Checklist for how I wonder... questions may start.
Math Building a Town Decisions
At the end of last week each student in our class became a town planner. Having only a 7x10 grid
of land to work with, each student chose what he or she thought was the best design for the
layout of the houses in our Building a Town problem. The 12 possible designs are the solutions
students have been finding over the course of the past 2 weeks to fit 60 families into equal-sized
buildings. The designs range from 1 very tall building of 60 homes to 60 individual homes. Each
design has its own strengths and weaknesses. This week students will complete a final draft of their
town design and write about why the design they chose is the best option.
Even though we are not sending home specific practice problems every week for math, please take
time to look for math connections at home. Have your child practice counting change, have them
estimate the total cost of a bill at a restaurant or the amount of change you will receive, or have
