1. Equations of motion:
The given system consists of two masses, M1 and M2 and are on a system with a spring and a dash-pot.
Two sinusoidal forces, F1 and F2, are acting on each of the masses producing a displacement X1 and X2
respectively.
2. Free Body Diagram:
1. For Mass 1

2. For Mass 2

Figure 1: Free Body Diagram
Above are the two free body diagrams for the two masses in the system. The positive sign convention is
defined towards the right side. The various forces acting on the body are shown. The equations of
motion are derived from the freebody diagram as follows. The Assumption that X2 > X1 is made.
According to newtons second law of motiion: The mass times the acceleration is equal to the sum total
of all the forces acting on the body.

Figure 2: Simulink Model

The Simulink model represents the derived equation. The forcing functions, F1 and F2 are the two sine
wave blocks. The equation is integrated twice to get the displacements from acceleration. The
respective damping coefficients and the spring constants are summed back as gains. The scope is used
to display the various inputs and respective accelerations, velocities and displacements.

4. Results:
X1:

Figure 3: X1 (Input, Acceleration, Velocity and Displacement)

From the given values of the forces, the force F2 has an initial phase angle of 1 radian. From the first
graph, it can be noted that the output accelerations, velocities and displacements have their amplitudes
decrease over time.

X2:
Figure 4: X2 (Input, Acceleration, Velocity and Displacement)
From the second graph, with a short time frame of 12 seconds, a definite pattern on the amplitude
cannot be assessed. However, the output displacement, X2, lags the input forcing function, F2, by a large
angle.
