All About Force: Push and Pull
We cant see them, but forces make the world go round.
Friction happens when two things rub against each other. Friction makes things slow down. It can also warm
them up. Try rubbing your hands together. Are your hands warmer?
Magnetism is a type of force. A magnet might pull an object toward it or push it away.
Sir Isaac Newton was one of the first scientists to study gravity and force. Scientists still use his three laws today.
Gravity is a natural force. It pulls everything down towards the earth.

Medicines:
Sometimes a part of the body can't make enough of a certain substance, and this can make a person sick. When
someone has (say: dye-uh-BEE-tees), the pancreas (a body organ that is part of the digestive system) can't make
enough of an important chemical called insulin, which the body needs to stay healthy.
If your body makes too much of a certain chemical, that can make you sick, too. Luckily, medicines can replace
what's missing (like insulin) or they can block production of a chemical when the body is making too much of it.
Most of the time when kids get sick, the illness comes from germs that get into the body. The body's immune
system works to fight off these invaders, but the germs and the body's natural way of germ fighting, like getting a
fever, can make a person feel ill. In many cases, the right kind of medicine can help kill the germs and help the
person feel better.

Exercise:
Like adults, kids need exercise. Most children need at least an hour of physical activity every day. Regular exercise
helps children
Feel less stressed
Feel better about themselves
Feel more ready to learn in school
Keep a healthy weight
Build and keep healthy bones, muscles and joints
Sleep better at night
As kids spend more time watching TV, they spend less time running and playing. Parents should limit TV, video
game and computer time. Parents can set a good example by being active themselves. Exercising together can be
fun for everyone. Competitive sports can help kids stay fit. Walking or biking to school, dancing, bowling and yoga
are some other ways for kids to get exercise.

Pitcher Plant:
A pitcher plant is a carnivorous plant. Carnivorous plants are plants that eat insects and other small animals.
Carnivorous plants grow in soil that has little nitrogen. All living things must have nitrogen. Carnivorous plants get
nitrogen from the insects they eat.
Pitcher plants catch (get) insects in a cup of liquid. The walls of the cup make nectar (sweet liquid) . The nectar
attracts insects. When an insect lands on the wall, it falls down into the liquid. The insect cannot get out of the
cup because the walls are smooth and slippery and the walls have hairs pointing down. After the insect is dead,
its body rots. Rotting releases (lets loose) the nitrogen from the insect's body. The nitrogen then goes into the
liquid and the plant takes in the nitrogen from the liquid.

Bacteria and Virus:
Bacteria help our bodies in several ways. They help with the digestion of food, and they help us to
produce needed vitamins. Almost all bacteria are helpful to our health and well-being. Only a few types
of bacteria cause disease. Many harmful organisms in our bodies are destroyed by bacteria.
Vaccines are created by using weakened bacteria.
Bacteria also help to make sourdough bread, yogurt, milk and cheese.
Viruses are about a thousand times smaller than bacteria and bacteria are much smaller than most
human cells.
Other than causing sore throat, cough, mild respiratory illness like runny nose without fever, a virus can
also cause severe illness such as pneumonia.
A virus must have a host cell (bacteria, plant or animal) in which to live and make more viruses. Outside
of a host cell, viruses cannot function.
A virus can enter our bodies through our nose, mouth or a break in the skin. Once they are inside the
body, they must find a host cell to infect.
