Papyrus is a plant. It grows along the river banks of the Nile in Egypt. The

Acid rain is one of the biggest environmental problems today. It has

long-term effects. It damages trees, plants and buildings. Acid rain also can
cause breathing and skin problems. It can also cause animals to become

Acid rain is caused by air pollution from cars and factories. These machines
burn fuel for energy. When fuel burns, it produces smoke and invisible
gases. These gases and smoke mix with clouds. Then this toxic rain falls on
the Earth.

Acid rain appeared in the middle 1800s. It was discovered by Robert Angus
Smith. Scientist didn’t start studying acid rain until 1950s. Factories used
special filters to remove harmful chemicals. This is a good solution. If the

Most people have heard the story of the lost island of Atlantis. But is any
part of the srory true? The Greek writer Plato wrote that Atlantis was an
island in the Atlantic Ocean. The island’s wealthy people designed many
great buildings and canals. At the center of the island they built a
beautiful golden temple . But the Atlanteans became greedy. They had
everything, but they still wanted more. The legend says gods became
angry and the island was hit by earthquakes and great waves. Finally, the
whole Atlantis sank into the sea.

In 2004, the explorer Robert Sarmast reported that he found the island’s
remains. Many people think Atlantis is simply a story. Richard Ellis
published a book on Atlantis in 1999. He says “there is not a piece of solid
evidence” for a real Atlantis. So, was the island real or not? Only one thing
is certain that the mystery of Atlantis will be with us for a long time.

Edinburgh Castle in Scotland is very old. It has been at the center of

Scottish history for over 800 years. A few hundred years ago, secret tunnels
were discovered under the castle . These tunnels were not natural.
Probably, they were built by people who lived there.

According to one story, a man was sent down into the tunnels to explore.
As he went down into the tunnels, he played bagpipes very loudly so
people could hear him outside. Suddenly the music stopped ... and the the
man never came out. Today, some people are sure that the man is
still down there and plays his song. They reported that you can hear the
music on dark nights.

Chimpanzees, or “chimps,” can be trained. They can learn and remember

various actions and movements. In this way, they can learn to “act” in films
and on TV. About 200 chimps are now used in the U .S. entertainment
business. Sometimes these chimps can seem almost like understanding
actors. But some people are against training chimps to be actors. Although
chimps are smart, they are still wild animals. At training centers, chimps
may be hit if they don’t do what the trainer says.

Also, most TV and movie chimps are very young. Dr. Jane Goodall says
“The chimpanzees we use in entertainment are generally young.
When Chimpanzees are six or eight yeras old, it is difficult to control them.
That’s why adult or older chimpanzees are given to zoos or kept in cages.
They live about 60 years. The cost of keeping a chimp is 10 000 dollars a
year.

Dinosaurs lived on Earth for about 150 million years. It was longer than
humans. Some were very large. For example Jobaria. It weighed 25 tons
and ate a large amount of plants every day. Jobaria lived in groups.
Because they protected themselves against meat eating dinasaurs.

How did dinosaurs become extinct ? No one really knows about the details.
Scientist say that they died 65 million years ago. Scientists also believe a
rock from space hit the earth and created a lot of dust in the air. The
dust stopped the sun ‘s heat and light and dinosaurs died of the cold.

Perhaps dinosaurs are still with us today. Many scientists believe that birds
arc related to dinosaurs. For example, they lay eggs and keep them warm
by sitting on them. Their bones are also very similar. Scientists hope to find
out if birds are related to dinosaurs.
