Hey Parents!!! Since the month of October is coming in on Wednesday the
Second Grade Team wanted to go ahead and reach out via newsletter to
inform you of upcoming events, academic focus, and epectations! "s always,

Monthly Academic Focus & Key Vocabulary
READING: The students will learn about the elements of fction and understand
that stories have a beginning, middle, and ending. They will get into the
characters reaction and point of view. They will also gather information from the
text and pictures in fction and non-fction text.

view, reaction, beginning, middle, ending, non-fction
Stories will include: The Enormous Turnip, Helping Out, Mr. Putty and Tabby:
Fly the Plane, Hedgehog Bakes a Cake and Lemonade for Sale.
WRITING: The students write and identify complete and incomplete sentences,
compound sentences, capitalization and punctuation.

PHONICS: The students will distinguish the diference between short and long
vowel sounds, syllables, prefx, sufx, blends, vowel teams, and inconsistent
words.

MATH: The students will focus on strategies to add and subtract numbers.

SCIENCE: The students will learn about changes in our surrounding caused by
weather, plants, animals, and/or people.
