%eff 9alino+s5! assured me that serious durabilit! 4as still one of the design parameters#
7hile the touch screen might represent a minor compromise, the e6tra functionalit! at a

probabl! 4orth it# <o4e+er, for applications 4here durabilit! is of the highest concern,
the regular Eclamshell,F non-touch model 4ill still be a+ailable and de+eloped in parallel#
$ntel did note, ho4e+er, that their research in the classroom 4ith e6isting deplo!ments
suggests that 5ids naturall! mo+e around, collaborate, and huddle 4ith their computers in
a 4a! that can reall! be facilitated 4ith a touch interface#
0he touch interface itself is appropriate for single-finger or st!lus input# $t also

$ntel also ust launched its EEcos!stem 'endor Alliance Program,F bringing

$ntel e6pects support for Edubuntu on the ne4 Classmate b! the time it launches# &! the

0his di+ersification of the platform Inetboo5 and touch-enabled, different screen

T%o7Sided Touch Screen
Frida!, August 1D, 122H
A pseudo-transparent screen from Microsoft and Mitsubishi lets people enter data
from both sides of a handheld de+ice#
Researchers at Microsoft and Mitsubishi are de+eloping a ne4 touch-screen
s!stem that lets people t!pe te6t, clic5 h!perlin5s, and na+igate maps from both the front
and bac5 of a portable de+ice# A semitransparent image of the fingers touching the bac5
of the de+ice is superimposed on the front so that users can see 4hat the!Cre touching#
Multitouch screens, populari*ed b! gadgets such as PDAs and AppleCs iPhone, are
pro+ing to be more +ersatile input de+ices than 5e!pads# &ut the more people touch their
screens, sa!s Patric5 &audisch, a Microsoft researcher in+ol+ed in the touch-screen
proect, the more content the! co+er up# M0ouch has certain promise but certain
problems,M he sa!s# M0he smaller the touch screen gets, the bigger !our fingers are in
proportion ### Multitouch multiplies the promise and multiplies the problems# =ou can
ha+e a 4hole hand o+er !our PDA screen, and thatCs a no go#M
0he current protot!pe, 4hich illustrates a concept that the researchers call
(ucid0ouch, is Mhac5ed togetherM from e6isting products, sa!s Daniel 7igdor, a
researcher at Mitsubishi Electric Research (ab and a PhD candidate at the )ni+ersit! of
0oronto# 0he team started 4ith a se+en-inch, commercial, single-input touch screen# 0o
the bac5 of the screen, the! glued a touch pad capable of detecting multiple inputs# M0his
allo4ed us to ha+e a screen on the front and a gesture pad Non the bac5O that could ha+e
multiple points,M sa!s 7igdor# M&ut 4hat that didnCt gi+e us 4as the abilit! to see the
hands#M So, he sa!s, the researchers added a boom 4ith a 7eb camera to the bac5 of the
gadget#
0he image from the 7eb camera and the touch information from the gesture pad
are processed b! soft4are running on a des5top computer, to 4hich the protot!pe is
connected# 0he soft4are subtracts the bac5ground from the image of the hands, 7igdor
e6plains, and flips it around so that the superimposed image is in the same position as the
userCs hands# Additionall!, pointers are added to the fingers so that a user can precisel!
select targets on the touch pad that might be smaller than her finger# $n ,ctober, a paper
describing the research 4ill be presented at the )ser $nterface Soft4are and 0echnolog!
s!mposium in Rhode $sland#
Admittedl!, this protot!pe has se+eral limitations# Most glaringl!, itCs impractical
to attach a boom and camera to the bac5 of a handheld de+ice# $n their paper, the
researchers suggest a number of different approaches for more-compact (ucid0ouch
protot!pes# 0he gesture pad on the bac5 could actuall! pro+ide an image of the userCs
fingers as 4ell as touch information, e6plains 7igdor# 0he pad uses an arra! of
capacitors, de+ices that store electrical charge# Fingers create a tin! electrical field that
changes the capacitance of the arra!, depending on their distance from it# 0his distance
can be tuned, sa!s 7igdor, so that the pad can register the entire finger, and not ust the
fingertip touching it# Another approach, he sa!s, 4ould be to use an arra! of tin!, single-
pi6el light sensors that could map fingersC locations# ,r the de+ice could use an arra! of
flashing, infrared-light-emitting diodes@ sensors 4ould then detect the lightCs reflection
off of a hand, 7igdor e6plains#
As touch screens shrin5, sa!s Scott 6lemmer, a professor of computer science at
Stanford )ni+ersit!, one of the biggest problems users face is inad+ertentl! co+ering up
content 4ith their fingers# (ucid0ouch, he sa!s, Mdistinguishes itself in t4o 4a!s" first, it
pro+ides better feedbac5 about 4here !ou are ### and the other distinction is that itCs
multitouch#M
E+en 4ith their protot!peCs cumbersome design, the researchers 4ere able to 4rite
applications for it and gather user responses from a small group# Depending on the
application, users found that touching the bac5 of the screen could be useful# For
instance, most preferred to t!pe on a Q4ert! 5e!pad using the front of the screen# &ut
4hen the 5e!pad 4as split do4n the middle, and one half 4as placed +erticall! along
each side of the screen, most preferred to t!pe on the bac5 of the de+ice# <alf of the
participants preferred using the bac5 of the de+ice for tas5s such as dragging obects and
na+igating maps# 0he users 4ere also di+ided on 4hether the superimposed images of
their fingers 4ere helpful# 04o-thirds of the participants preferred the superimposed
images 4hen using the 5e!board and dragging obects, and half preferred them 4hile
using the map#
0hese results suggest that a userCs preference for (ucid0ouch and pseudo-
transparenc! depends on the application# &audisch suspects that one of the first places
that this technolog! could appear is in portable gaming, 4here specific games could be
4ritten for the technolog!# &ut importantl!, it could enable people to start thin5ing
differentl! about the potential of multitouch screens on handhelds#
M$ thin5--*ooming out for a moment--4hatCs reall! e6citing about this time is that
