Chapter I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter contains the introduction of the study, statement of the problem,

conceptual framework, the significance of the study, scope delimitations and limitations,

and the definition of terms.

Introduction

In today’s generation, people’s knowledge about cooking has become less

notable. Mostly, individuals tend to eat on fast food restaurants, carinderias, or someplace

where they can just order whatever is listed on the menu. Cooking is a process of

preparing food by the application of heat. According to Chelsea Ritschel (2017),

millennials are selective and demanding compared to any previous generations.

Benjamin Storm, Ph.D. (2018) indicated that the rise of technologies and the internet

caused young people to rely on the recipes and procedures on Google or Pinterest to

remember such, rather than committing it to heart.

Techopedia explained that mobile application is a type of application software that

is designed to run on a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet computer. There

are many free and top paid cooking mobile applications available in Playstore for android

devices and the Apple store for iOS such as Big Oven, Tasty, Kitchen Stories, Yummly

and etc. which contains recipes of different meals and procedures. These mobile apps

offer the needed instructions to make a homemade meal or weekend special. And for the

application to be successful, it must have a simple design framework, tempting snaps of

food and easy ways to master recipes.

Mobile games are games designed for mobile devices, such as smart phones,

feature phones, tablets, portable media players and even personal computers can be

considered as "mobile" today. Mobile games are usually downloaded from app stores as

well as from the mobile operator's portal. Mobile games help improve mood and it trains

the brain. As stated by Zuhair Sharif (2018), mobile games help to make new social

connections, just like when playing a multi-player game wherein the players work together

to solve a problem and ameliorate mental stability, it reduces depression, relieves stress

and even creating a good feeling. Valerie (2018) indicated that mobile cooking games are

designed to give customers exactly what they wanted. In addition, playing games take up

leisure time and give knowledge about the art of cooking.

The proponents proposed a cooking mobile application that gives information and

guidelines in cooking a certain dish. It aims to provide the needed particulars and recipes

for the intended users. There is a section where information about famous chefs. Mini

games can also be played to ease boredom and exercise the brain of individuals.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the development of the mobile cooking application

for the STI community.

Specifically, it seeks answers to the following questions:

1. What is the main purpose of developing Cookify?

2. How did the proponents design and develop the mobile application?

3. What are the effects of the Cookify to the users?

4. How does the mobile app function?

used in order to produce the output.

Lastly, the third box shows the output; title of the mobile application.

Significance of the Study

The mobile application will be beneficial to the following.

To the teachers, the given particulars will guide the teachers on how the developed

mobile application works.

To the students, this study will provide information on the android apps that will

utilize well when they are informed.

To the institution, this project will aid the university to understand the faculty and

students. Moreover, the faculty of the university will be more aware of the advanced

technology for the 21st century.

To the present researchers, the information provided will serve as a reference for

the particulars they need in their research. It will also serve as a clarification of their inquiry

to the subject itself.

To the future researchers, this will serve as a guide of research about android

practicing based on cooking app for the people who have the desire to cook. It will help

them in conducting a similar study.

Scope, Delimitations, and Limitations

The study is focused on the development of a mobile application “Cookify" that

includes general features, application contents, and user interface. The proponents focus

on giving recipe information and techniques using a mobile application.

The study is delimited in terms of tackling the development process of Cookify.

The mobile application’s source codes are exclusive for the proponents only. But

screenshots are provided for the beneficiaries to catch sight of the user interface of

Cookify.

The study is limited in providing facts, food recipes and procedures. The

proponents also added mini games for entertainment. The mobile application “Cookify” is

intended for aspiring cooks and ordinary people to make cooking easier as they use the

mobile application as their companion.

Definition of Terms

For a better understanding of the study, the researchers gave several terms that

were defined as conceptually and operationally as used in the study.

Android. A mobile operating system developed by Google (TechTerms, 2019). In this

project, Android is the mobile OS where Cookify is compatible.

Cookify. The name of the mobile cooking application developed by the proponents in this

project.

Cooking. A skill of preparing food by combining and mixing ingredients with the

application of heat (Oxford Dictionary, 2019). In this project, the mobile app will help the

user in the field of cooking.

Cooking Application. A type of application designed to run on mobile devices that

provides recipes and procedures (TechTerms, 2019). In this project, it is the type of

application created by the proponents.

Logo. A logo is a graphic mark, emblem, symbol or stylized name used to identify a

company, organization, product or brand (Investopedia, 2018). In this project, in order to

show a visual image of the icon of Cookify, a logo is made.

Mobile Application. Applications that are designed to run on mobile devices

(Techopedia, 2018). In this project, a mobile application is a thing being developed by the

proponents.

Mobile Games. Games that are played on smartphones or tablet (Techopedia, 2018). In

this project, mobile games serve as a quencher for entertainment.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies and the synthesis of the

art after the thorough and in – depth search done by the proponents.

Research Literature

The Digital Kitchen: Apps and Online Services to Make You a Better Cook is an

approach that promotes different cooking applications widely used online. Through The

Digital Kitchen published by Angela Johnston (2018), aspiring cooks will be able to install

a cooking application of their preference which they can use as a guide in cooking.

SideChef is one of the cooking applications promoted by The Digital Kitchen, it is a guide

for wanna-be-chefs through a recipe step-by-step. It features over 1,000 different recipes

from food bloggers, other users, and chefs. There is a handy self-timer built within the

app. Own recipes can also be shared on SideChef. Bugs exist in the app; the search bar

doesn't always show the right results that the user is looking for. It is free for the iPad,

iPhone, and Android.

There are more recommended cooking apps by The Digital Kitchen including

Salted, America’s Test Kitchen: Cook’s Illustrated, and ChefSteps. Salted is more likely

a digital cooking school, but can only be accessed online, not as an application. America’s

Test Kitchen: Cook’s Illustrated is like a digital version of the magazine containing extra

features to improve one’s skill. Each recipe has a video attached to it. Lastly, ChefSteps,

elite cooking – schools apps out there. Most ChefSteps classes are paid and some

are free. It is available for iOS and Android. In addition, the Digital Care (digitalcare.org)

also offers and promotes free cooking apps and Epicurious is number one on the list.
Epicurious is one of the most popular cooking apps on the market, feels like one

of the more polished options. With more than 35,000 recipes, it is a robust food

experience. In addition to being able to browse recipes by categories (including relevant

ones like "Spring Brunch," "Passover Mains" and "Mother's Day Dinner"), users can look

up what is in the season where they live and add items to a shopping list. One of the app's

most helpful features is its "Smart Timer," which offers various cooking times for all

different cuts of meats and beyond.

Research Studies

Ruchi Gupta, "Quick Recipes Android Application 2015". This study aims to

develop an android application that provides user flexibility to search, share, save recipes

from the cloud. It makes finding recipes easy. The application provides a capability to the

user to search top rated, trending recipes. It also provides sharing capability, giving the

user a choice to share the recipe to different social media accounts including Facebook,

Twitter, Google+ and Gmail. The application is a time saver in providing recipes in a few

clicks. The user interface of Quick Recipes is clean and simple.

Rahul Dandekar, Sanket Gadkari, Mayuri Sadudia, and Sayali Kamble, “FOODIE:

An Android application". This study aims to develop a mobile application that enables

user's search for the particular recipe they are interested in. The project goal is to create

an Android software application that is accessible to everyone. The application

development platform is Android Studio because it is very much cost-effective and

dynamic.

Synthesis
Researchers on Related Literature presents the different cooking mobile apps in

the market and its functionalities. The Digital Kitchen: Apps and Online Services to Make

You a Better Cook lets a particular user to choose an app of their preference as said by

Angela Johnston (2018). Cooking mobile apps have the same goal of providing recipes

for intended users. On the other hand, The Digital Care (digitalcare.org) promotes the first

in line, Epicurious, which is likely better than the applications promoted by The Digital

Kitchen because it has thousands of recipes available and includes features that the other

cooking mobile apps do not.

Researchers on Related Literature and Studies have been made, it was observed that

the studies focused on developing a simple cooking mobile application that includes

simple features. Both studies aim to develop a mobile application that enables user's

search but Ruchi Gupta's study is more complex than that of Rahul Dandekar, Sanket

Gadkari, Mayuri Sadudia, and Sayali Kamble’s.

The researchers conclude that the proposed mobile application Cookify lacks

some features. But, Cookify is user-friendly and the user interface's color theme and

design are catchy. Unlike any other cooking apps, Cookify also provides information

about famous chefs, facts and trivias. The mobile application has mini games for

entertainment.
