CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION
The cardiovascular system consists of the heart, blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries), and the blood that
flows through them. The heart acts as a pump, ensuring that blood circulates through every blood vessel in the body,
supplying cells with the oxygen and nutrients that they need to survive, and removing waste products. The heart
works harder when you are active, pumping more vigorously in order to meet the cells' increased metabolic
demands.
Functions of the cardiovascular system
Transport Circulation of blood through a network of vessels throughout the body.
Delivery The heart pumps nutrients from the gastrointestinal tract and hormones from the endocrine
glands in the circulating blood to the target cells of the body.
Removal Blood flowing through the heart and vessels facilitates the removal of waste products, such
as nitrogen and carbon dioxide from the body.
