1 ECC500 Overview
1.1 Positioning
The ECC500 is a cross-platform monitoring product, in which a main control module works
with several expansion boards to monitor the environment, uninterruptible power supply
(UPS), natural-ventilation units in real time. In addition, the GPRS module on the ECC500
can send short messages to prompt related personnel to handle alarms. The ECC500 can
collect and analyze statistics on feedback information and automatically control system
components. This ensures the system reliability and security and meets all monitoring
requirements of a mini data center. Figure 1-1 shows an ECC500.
Figure 1-1 ECC500

1.2 Benefits
In a mini data center, the ECC500 can automatically detect the connection equipment
(southbound equipment) and allows you to configure, control, monitor, and collect statistics
on the equipment. The ECC500 also connects to a web client through the IP network for
presenting a web management interface, and provides the alarm notification function using
the GPRS module.
The ECC500 allows you to perform remote maintenance on the web user interface (WebUI)
or local maintenance on the LCD. Maintenance data is synchronized between the WebUI and
the LCD.
UPS Monitoring
The ECC500 obtains real-time data and alarms by running UPS status query commands
periodically (the period is shorter than 15s), and reports and clears alarms.
If the UPS does not respond the UPS status query commands for three consecutive times,
the ECC500 reports alarms indicating interrupted communication with the UPS. The
ECC500(Data center)

2

ECC500 clears the alarms only after detecting a UPS with the same type as the original
one.
The ECC500 collects the real-time performance data (rated values) every 60s and other
data by running commands, and saves all data to its memory.
The ECC500 can query real-time status data by running testing commands during
equipment deployment, scheduled preventive maintenance, and corrective maintenance.
UPS monitoring alarms are reported indicating mains voltage exceptions, low voltage of
batteries, UPS faults, and UPS communication interruption.
Natural-ventilation monitoring
The ECC500 can connect to and manage the fan control system and use the speed
adjustment curve and temperature sensor in the fan controller to control the fan rotational
speed for the natural-ventilation equipment.
The ECC500 can monitor the fan controller, temperature sensor, and four connected fans.
Natural-ventilation monitoring alarms are reported indicating the failure of temperature
sensor at the air exhaust vent, high and low ventilation temperatures, control board and
fan faults, and communication interruption.
Alarm Notification by Sending Messages
The ECC500 allows the GPRS module to send alarm notification messages to the mobile
phones of maintenance engineers.
A maximum of five field application engineer (FAE) phone numbers can be set on the
ECC500 over the LCD or WebUI. When major or critical alarms are generated, the
GPRS module sends the alarm information to these phones.
Data Collection and Processing
The ECC500 reports the data collected by the water sensor, smoke sensor, door status
sensor, camera, and ambient temperature and humidity sensor, and reports alarms over
dry contacts.
The ECC500 can back up its own data and that of the monitored equipment. For example,
the ECC500 backs up the alarm information that is downloadable from the WebUI.
When failing to communicate with a web client, the ECC500 still works properly and
stores alarms. After communication is restored, the stored alarm information can be
downloaded by using the WebUI.
Centralized Management of Intelligent Equipment
The ECC500 remotely or locally manages intelligent equipment, such as the
natural-ventilation unit and UPS, in a centralized manner. The ECC500 communicates
with the natural-ventilation unit and UPS over the RS485 serial port, and communicates
with a web client using 10 Mbit/s or 100 Mbit/s autonegotiation Ethernet port.
The ECC500 provides ports for receiving signals from sensors and sending control
signals to meet requirements for data collection and control.
Alarm Detection and Management
The ECC500 monitors analog and digital parameters and reported data and alarms to
detect alarm generation and clearance in real time. The ECC500 manages alarms in the
following manner:
ECC500(Data center)

3

Display all alarms on the LCD or on the WebUI, and turn on the alarm indicator to
indicate major or critical alarms.
When the major or critical alarms are cleared, turn off the LED alarm indicator and
clear these alarms on the LCD or WebUI.
The ECC500 saves a maximum of 800 historical alarms, among which you can view
cleared alarms on the LCD or on the WebUI.
User-Friendly Interface
The ECC500 displays all operation parameters for the monitored equipment on the LCD.
The ECC500 allows you to set site-deployment and network-connection parameters for
sites and the NMS, such as IP addresses and access point names (APNs), on the LCD to
implement laptop-free deployment.
The ECC500 provides the WebUI that transmits data after encrpting it over SSL to help
obtain real-time information, alarms, and statistics from tab pages and issue control
commands through the data exchange interface.
A web client of the ECC500 supports SNMP northbound interfaces, data query, alarm
reporting, access to third-party network management system.
A web client of the ECC500 supports a maximum of 15 accounts in three levels
(administrator, engineer, and operator). Each level can be assigned a maximum of five
accounts.
The ECC500 allows the access of a maximum of three web clients running on three
separate computers. A user can log in to the ECC500 from only one client at a time.
Communication
A web client can obtain ECC500-reported equipment information, such as UPS and
natural-ventilation information, by communicating with the ECC500 through the IP
network with encrypted transmission. In addition, the ECC500 performs operations (for
example, open or close dry contacts and control southbound equipment) after receiving
control and configuration information from the WebUI.
The ECC500 communicates with southbound equipment over Huawei temperature
control protocol and the Modbus protocol to collect the data required for other modules.
The ECC500 also sends control and configuration commands to southbound equipment
to perform operations, such as battery connection and disconnection.
By communicating with northbound equipment, the ECC500 allows you to load its
applications and those of southbound equipment online and view the electronic labels.

Connecting the GSM Antenna and Installing the SIM Card

The GSM antenna connector is fastened to the RF port on the GPRS module.
The antenna is installed in an unshielded place to ensure proper signal reception.
If the GPRS antenna is longer than 3 meters, take surge protection measures.
If the mounting bracket of the GSM antenna has a plastic shell, remove the plastic shell
before installing the GSM antenna. This ensures sufficient magnetic force.

Replace the ECC500 if the main control module or basic I/O module is faulty. For details, see 3.2
Installation.
Procedure
Step 1 Remove the cables from a faulty module one by one. During the removal, insulate the cables
and stamp labels on them in a timely manner.
Step 2 Loosen the captive screws on the faulty module anti-clockwise using the M3 screwdriver.
Step 3 Pull out the faulty module by the handle, as shown in Figure 5-1.
Figure 5-1 Procedure for pulling out a faulty module

Step 4 Hold the handle of a new module, and insert the module into its slot in the ECC500 subrack.
Step 5 Push the new module until its front panel is level with that of the ECC500 subrack.
Step 6 Fold the handle.
Step 7 Tighten the captive screws clockwise using the M3 screwdriver, as shown in Figure 5-2.
