Aim: How active are Australians? Students learn to interpret and analysis graphs and statistics Class: Year 11 Physical Education
Topic: Physical Activity

Introduction: 5 minutes
Intro into todays activities Recap on inactivity and sedentary behaviour: definitions and examples.
Find out what the class knows about the national physical activity guidelines, very briefly discuss.

Body of the Lesson: 90 minutes
Activity: Do you meet the guidelines? (Get the student to complete the activity in their workbooks activity displayed on
PowerPoint) 5 minutes

Discussion - How active are Australians?
- How do we find out this information? Surveys etc.
- How is this information presented? Graphs, reports etc. 5 minutes

Adult participation patterns graph pg: 290 text book (to be displayed on PowerPoint)
Take a look at the graph get students to write out a couple of sentences, summarising the main findings of the graph. Then as a
class, show an ideal example of interpreting a graph on the PowerPoint and highlight how to look for the main points so they
know what know what we expect in the next activity.
Get them to do the same for the second graph repeat ideal answer 15 minutes

Activity: Interpreting statistics and analysing data
- Give students a copy of the survey and prac sheet; split up work according to colours on handout.
- Students are to answer the questions relating to their section
- 10 minutes to discuss the findings with your group members and then as a class
- Compare and swap notes with each group member so the worksheet is completely filled out - 40/50 minutes

Physical Activity in Australia worksheet spend the rest of the lesson completing worksheet, graphing results and answering the
questions on the handout. 20 minutes (rest of lesson)

Conclusion of the lesson: 5 minutes
Wrap up lesson with discussion on barriers to physical activity, why people might not participate?
Answer any questions and deliver homework

The class ran smoothly and for a double PE lesson inside a classroom. The students were receptive of the learning activities and especially enjoyed the
group activity. They were able to get a lot down in a shorter period and learn from each other. Next lesson I would like to focus on
