Colloquial Usage in English
E.g.
- Who is it? It is me. [verbal accepted English].
- It is I who am responsible for this department. [written
accepted].
Usage Depends on Sense and Meaning of the word.
For example, which ones are correct?
- We are liable to have Model X in stock.
- We are likely to have Model X in stock.
- I am coming over your house tomorrow.
- Ive got a product which is [different from, different than] any
other product on the market.
- The results of the survey were [different from, different than]
they expected.
Omit needless words and use definite,
specific, concrete language
WEAK: The business suffered a series of damaging
misfortunes within a short period of time.
BETTER: In one month the companys warehouse burned down,
the treasurer absconded with the funds, and the
competition lowered prices.
WEAK: Unexpectedly high attendance made it impossible to
accommodate all those who wished to enter.
BETTER: Six hundred people were turned away at the door.
WEAK: He was visibly chagrined at the teacher's corporal
rebuke.
BETTER: He cried when the teacher slapped him.
