Harwood Student Headed to 2015
United World Games for Basketball
Jennifer James, a senior at Harwood Union
High School, has been selected by American
International Sports Teams (AIST) to represent
the USA at the 2015 United World Games for
Basketball. The USA Team will travel to
Germany, Austria & Italy for international com-
petition June 15-25, 2015.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for
Jennifer to participate in the international com-
petition. In addition to the experience on the
court, she will have the opportunity to explore
new cultures, gain educational experience and
interact with people from all around the world.
There are multiple ways to show your support.
The Waterbury Senior Center has donated their
facility for a Benefit Spaghetti Dinner and Silent
Auction on Saturday, November 8th with two
seating times - 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The dinner
will include salad, spaghetti, meatballs, bread,
dessert & beverages for $15/adult and $5 for
children 12 & under. There will be door prizes, a
variety of auction items, lots of good food and
great company.

seating time or if you would like to donate some-
thing for the silent auction or baked goods for the
dinner. If you would like to donate cash for her

Jennifer has played basketball all of her life at
many different levels: elementary and middle
School, AAU, Mini-Metro, and she led the
Harwood Varsity Team in scoring as a freshman.
During her sophomore year, Harwood posted its
best record since 2005 and the second best
record since 1996! She hopes to set a couple of
school records for blocks and rebounds this
year.
During 2014, Jennifer played for Kerry Lyons
(former VT Frost Heaves player & coach) on the
Next Level Athletics team. They were successful
at several tournaments throughout New England
and competed in the Jr. Nationals in Washington,
D.C.
Jennifer plans to play basketball at Johnson
State College next year. She will major in Early
Childhood Education and Special Education.

The Vermont racing community mourns the loss of an up and
coming Late Model driver, 17 year-old Joey M Laquerre. RR&Rs
thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Laquerre family who
collectively has played a large part in Vermont racing for over 50
years. Life, as in this situation, often does not play fair. There is
no rhyme or reason that a single family should have to endure
repeated loss and pain. God Bless you all. God Speed Joey!
One week ago Dale Earnhardt Jr. failed to qualify for the
Eliminator 8 in the Chase. Sunday at Martinsville Speedway
Earnhardt became a Chase spoiler winning the Goodys Headache
Relief Shot 500 at the famed Paper Clip track holding off
Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon. The win gave
Hendrick Motorsports a 1-2 finish on the 10-year anniversary
weekend of the fatal plane crash that killed owner Rick Hendricks
son, Ricky, and nine others aboard. This means so much to all of
us, Earnhardt said. I lost my daddy a long time ago and I know
how hard that is. I cant imagine losing the amount of people Rick
lost. My heart goes out to him during this weekend. This honors
them. Gordon was the highest finishing Chase driver as the day
was not kind to several of the eight drivers still alive the first race
of the Eliminator Round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint
Cup, as Carl Edwards (20th) , Brad Keselowski (31st) and Kevin
Harvick (33rd) all finishing outside the top 20. Without a Chase
driver in Victory Lane, no driver clinched an automatic berth in
the championship finale at Homestead. Chase contender Ryan
Newman finished behind the two Hendrick Chevrolets in third
followed by Tony Stewart and Joey Logano, fourth and fifth,
respectively. Chase driver Denny Hamlin finished eighth. The win
was the fourth of the season and first career for Earnhardt at the
Virginia half-miler.
Driving a No. 34 Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota painted and
numbered as a tribute to NASCAR Hall of Fame nominee Wendell
Scottand with Scotts family in attendance at Martinsville
Speedwaypolesitter Darrell Wallace Jr. held off Timothy Peters
to win Saturdays Kroger 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck
Series race. Last year at Martinsville, driving the No. 54 KBM
Tundra, Wallace became the first African-American driver to win
a race in one of NASCARs top three touring series since Scott
accomplished the feat in what is now the NASCAR Sprint Cup
Series on Dec. 1, 1963 at Speedway Park in Jacksonville, Fla.
Though his number was changed to 34 on Saturday, in honor of
Scotts traditional car number, the result was the same for Wallace,
who grabbed the lead from Johnny Sauter in heavy traffic on Lap
188 of 200, moments before the record 11th caution slowed the
race. Wallace pulled away after a restart with six laps left and beat
Peters to the finish line by .495 seconds. Peters had bumped Sauter
out of the way in the closing laps, also opening the door for reign-
ing series champion Matt Crafton, who came home third and
extended his series lead to 18 points over fifth-place finisher Ryan
Blaney. I wasnt worried about anybody, honestly, Wallace said.
They kept telling me where everybody was, and I said I didnt
care. Its our weekend and were going to come out and take this
(grandfather) clock (trophy) home with us and we just did that.
That was so fun. Martinsville is my favorite place to come to.
Without the support of NASCAR and Toyota the whole Wendell
Scott family is here and this is a special moment, just a perfect
weekend for us. Its a true honor to have Wendell Scott on our
Toyota Tundra and to be able to put it in Victory Lane. I know he
(Scott) just said up there, Hell yeah. This is cool. Wallace said
Saturdays win surpassed his first victory in the series at
Martinsville a year ago. It means a lot--I know I had a guardian
angel looking over me this weekend, said Wallace, who took over
third place in the series standings, 22 points behind Crafton. To
be able to put it in Victory Lane, you couldnt ask for a better
weekend. You thought last year was special, but this definitely
beats it. Wallace led a race high 97 of the 200 laps. Second was
the pace car, which was out front for a record 71 laps during a race
that featured more rookies than veterans and six drivers competing
in the series for the first time. Erik Jones ran fourth, followed by
Blaney.
Garage Garble
Grovetons Riverside Speedway officials have been forced to
again postpone their Fall Brawl 200 event due to damp and drizzly
weather on Sunday. A make-up date is being worked on and is
slated to be announced on Monday.
Also forced to cancel weekend events; Devils Bowl Speedway
has for the third time been forced to postpone their season ending
dirt track finale once again due to weather. The event will now be
run this Saturday, November 1 at 1:00pm.
NASCAR last week announced three key enhancements in the
NASCAR XFINITY and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series
for the 2015 season. Beginning next season, the qualifying rule for
the NASCAR XFINITY Series (currently the NASCAR
Nationwide Series) and the NASCAR Camping World Truck
Series will resemble that of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and
will emphasize speed. The NASCAR Camping World Truck
Series maximum starting field will be set at 32 trucks. The drivers
last name will be featured on the back window of each series cars
and trucks, helping fans to better identify the drivers. Next season
in the NASCAR XFINITY Series, cars starting in positions 1-33
will be determined by their fastest single lap during qualifying in
descending order with the fastest qualifier starting first. The
NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will follow the same pro-
cedure for positions 1-27. In the XFINITY Series, the next six
positions will first be assigned to the highest ranking cars in owner
points (4 in the Truck Series) that have attempted all of the races,
have not already earned a starting position through qualifying and
have entered the event by the posted entry deadline. The final
starting position will be awarded to the most recent eligible past
champion driver. If there is no eligible past champion driver, then
a seventh car or fifth truck will make the field based upon owner
points. Prior to this enhancement, the top 30 cars and top 25 trucks
in owner points in each series, respectively, were guaranteed a
starting spot in each of those series events. Starting next year, a
maximum of seven cars and five trucks will be locked into a given
NASCAR XFINITY Series or NASCAR Camping World Truck
Series race, respectively. If a qualifying session is cancelled
because of inclement weather, each series field will be set per the
rule book with starting lineups determined by practice speeds
