Combustion

Reaction

Alkenes are highly flammable and burns readily

in air, forming carbon dioxide and water.
C2H4 + 3 O2 2 CO2 + 2 H2O
Addition Reaction

Alkenes react in many addition reaction , which

occur by opening up the double-bond.

Polymerization

It is a reaction that yields polymers such as the

plastics polyethylene and polypropylene.

Importance & Uses

Feedstock
Alkenes

are use as raw materials for the

manufacture of Industrial Chemicals.
Propene, the second most important feedstock
for organic products, is mainly used for the
production of polypropylene and various
oxidation products.
Ethene is the most important organic feedstock in
the chemical industry. It is used as feedstock for
many chemical products

Importance & Uses

Plastics
Alkenes

are extremely important in the

manufacture of plastics. All plastics are in some
way related to alkenes. The names of some
plastics (e.g. Polythene, Polypropene), relate to
their alkene partners. Plastics are used for all kinds
of tasks, from packaging and wrapping, to
clothing and outdoor apparel.

Importance & Uses

Bonding

Agent -The catalytic reforming of alkenes

form benzene and other aryl compounds, an
intermediate for making adhesives.
Toluene is produced for the synthesis of benzene,
15% for the manufacture of chemicals and 10%
as a solvent for paints and gasoline additive.
Xylenes been used as replacements for benzene
and toluene in the production of resins, synthetic
fabrics, and plastics and as gasoline additives,
cleaners and solvents.
