Fluid mechanics-Tutorial 1
Q1. A tin plate of very large area is placed in a gap of height h with oil of viscosities 1,
2 on two sides of the plate. The plate is pulled at a constant velocity v. Calculate the
position of the plate so that (a) the shear force on two sides of the plate is same (b) the
force required to drag.
Q2. In a tube having internal diameter 1.5 is immersed to a depth of 1.25 cm of the oil.
Air is forced through the tube forming a bubble to a lower end. What magnitude of the
unit surface energy will be indicated by a maximum of 150 N/m2.
Q3. A solid hemisphere of density and radius r floats with its plane base immersed in
a liquid of density 1 (1 ). Show that the equilibrium is stable and the meta-centric
height is r(

).

Q4. A body has the cylindrical upper portion of 4 m diameter and 2 m deep. The lower
portion is a cured one, which displaces a volume of 0.9
of water. The centre of
buoyancy of the curved portion is at a distance of 2.10 m below the top of the cylinder.
The centre of gravity of the whole body is 1.5 m below the top of the cylinder. The total
displacement of water is 4.5 tones. Find the meta-centric height of the body.
Q5. A wooden block (specific gravity 0.7) of width 15 cm x 30 cm depth and 150 cm
length floats horizontally on the surface of sea water (specific weight 10 KN). Calculate
the volume of water displaced, depth of immersion & position of center of buoyancy.
Also find the meta-centric height and regulating moment for a tilt of 5 . Comment
stability of the block.
Q6. A container is filled with oil of specific gravity 0.87 under pressure. Its cover plate
measuring 1.2 m x 1.2m is held in position by a force Z as shown. Find Z and the
reaction.
