Relay For Life of UNC-Chapel Hill To Hold

Annual Fundraising Gala at Franklin Hotel
Chapel Hill, N.C., October 20, 2014 Relay For Life of the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill will hold its annual Gala fundraiser on November 13, 2014 at the Franklin Hotel.
The event will be a casino night in which attendees can trade in their tokens at the end of the
night for raffle tickets.
There will be live entertainment by the Bucket Brothers, a local jazz band made up of boys ages
14 and 11. The guest speaker will be UNC Womens Basketball Coach Sylvia Hatchell, a cancer
survivor.
Gala is one of my favorite fundraising events, said Co-Director Alexa Colasurdo. Its a fun
way to spend time with friends and members of the Chapel Hill community while supporting a
fantastic cause.
Gala is a key fundraiser for Relay For Life of UNC, as it typically gets community organizations
and leaders involved in the fundraising process. Previous years have included silent auctions, and
this year will be the first casino night event.
Relay For Life of UNC is a yearlong fundraising effort for the American Cancer Society that
culminates in an event in the spring. Teams will camp out overnight at Fetzer Field, taking turns
walking Belk Track for a total of 20 hours to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.
About Relay For Life of UNC
Relay For Life of UNC began in 1996 and has raised over $150,000 each year with the majority of money
coming back to UNC Hospitals for cancer research. The main event in the spring brings together students,
faculty, and the Chapel Hill community to celebrate, remember, and fight back.
Relay For Life began in 1985 with one man who walked and ran around a track for 24 hours and raised
$27,000 for the American Cancer Society. This year, Relay For Life will take place in nearly 5,100
communities in the United States and 20 other countries and will raise funds to support the Societys
mission of saving lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and
fighting back.
