The Digestive System

Is the process of digestion in our bodies that has many stages. Digestion involves breaking
down food into smaller and smaller components which can be absorbed and assimilated
into the body.

We are going to introduce 9 different parts of the Digestive System and label them including:
The appendix, esophagus, small intestine, large intestine, liver, stomach, teeth, tongue, and the rectum.

The Appendix

The appendix sits at the junction of the small intestine and large intestine. Its a thin tube about
four inches long.

The Esophagus

The esophagus is a muscular tube connecting the throat (pharynx) with the
stomach. The esophagus is about 8 inches long.

Small Intestine

The small intestine (small bowel) is about 20 feet long and


about an inch in diameter.

Large Intestine

The large intestine (colon or large bowel) is about 5 feet long


and about 3 inches in diameter.

Liver

The liver is a large, meaty organ that sits on the right side of the
belly. Weighing about 3 pounds.

Stomach

The stomach is a muscular organ located on the left side of the


upper abdomen.

Teeth

The teeth are the hardest substances in the human body.


Besides being essential for chewing, the teeth play an
important role in speech

Tongue

The tongue is known as the strongest muscle in


the body, it is made up of a group of muscles
that allows us to taste food, swallow, and talk.

Rectum

The anus is the opening where the gastrointestinal tract ends


and exits the body.
