Highlights From October and November Meetings

On October 24th a nice group of us met at the Tulare Adult School Culinary Arts Center in
Tulare. We were indeed treated to a splendiferous feast. We had a five course dinner
that included duck prepared two ways, chicken noodle consomm, salad, a wonderful
beef fillet, and chocolate dessert. We all came away with at least one prize. Margaret
shared her travels to Africa and cruises in Europe. We also had time for fellowship.
The next day we joined Epsilon Xi at Benanni Restaurant in Dinuba. Program speaker
provided us with information about Common Core as being worked out in Kings Canyon
Unified. Common Core came about through the work of governors wanting to have
common standards throughout the country. Most states have adopted Common Core.
The problem is there is no curriculum developed for it. School districts and teachers need
to develop materials to address the standards. Besides these materials Kings Canyon is
using commuter programs like Lexia, Mathletics, and Super Grammar to meet individual
needs. We were also able to see Kathy Williams who transferred to Epsilon Xi this fall. She
looked good and said she was preparing a program about a pioneer teacher for her
chapter in November.
Our chapter had our first Bunco fundraiser on November 1st at Jeans. We had fun
learning the game, moving from table to table, and visiting. We all decided that this is
something we need to do at least once a year. We earned about $280 for our grants-inaid. Jean and Kathy served a soup luncheon afterward with a pumpkin bread pudding
for dessert. Perfect for that rainy day!
