Valeries Message
MESSAGE FROM YOUR
SIGMA CHAPTER
PRESIDENT:
There is something
exceptionally soothing about
the arrival of autumn. My
husband and I went to the
Fresno State football game
yesterday evening where the
cool crispness in the air
made the whole experience
so much more enjoyable than
the previous weeks game.
We are heading towards
those autumn holidays and
celebrations that always bring
the kid in each of us out into
the open.
Before I go too far ahead, I
like to update those who
were unable to attend our
September 6th meeting.
First, thank you to our
hostesses, Teresa and
Candy, for choosing our
location (China
Garden in Selma) and the
pink flowers that graced our
tables. Thank you Mary Ellen
for contacting Lisa Jipson.
She came to our meeting as
our guest speaker and told us
about LIFE. This organization
is doing so many great things
for literacy with the grants it
gives to others. Lisa told us
about some of these unique
projects that were chosen for
funding. The LIFE auction
which takes place at our
yearly convention was also
described. Veronica
Thomas, our Area Director,
came and presented us with
several awards

came and presented us with several awards. Since we had a discussion about fundraisers at our
meeting, we were blessed to have Lisa and Veronica in attendance because they shared all kinds
of great ideas. One of which we are going to try out at our November meeting with a game of
Bunco (not sure of the spelling).
There will be no meeting on the first Saturday of October. Instead, there is a fun Halloween party
planned for Friday night, October 24
th
. We have also been invited to attend Epsilon Xis noon
meeting on Saturday, October 25th, from 11am to 1:00pm, at Bennanis Italian Restaurant to hear
about Common Core. If you are interested in attending Epsilon Xis meeting, please let me know
by October 9th (we will need to make reservations).
Thank you to Nina for bringing in the motel/hotel courtesy products which help us prepare the kits
we give to Open Gate. Nina, from the number of products you brought, I understand while you
were so busy this summer. If there are others who traveled and collected products, please give
them to Mary Ellen or Jean. This summer was busy for many of you. We were updated on some
of these activities or challenges at our September meeting. Please continue to remember those
members (Barbara, Lynn, and Jessica) who are facing illness or loss. Margaret C., we are anxious
to hear about your travels.
Thank you to all who paid their yearly dues! It makes Jeans job so much easier.

Highlights from September Meeting
Area Director Veronica Thomas met with us at the September 6
th

meeting. She presented the Chapter with an Honor Chapter Award, a
certificate for participation in the THAT program, one for helping new
teachers, and another for our children at risk programs with Open Gate and
Jarod boxes.
Guest speaker Lisa Jipson explained how to receive a LIFE grant. These
are awarded to groups such as chapters, schools, and individuals. You do
not have to be a member of Delta Kappa Gamma to receive one. If you
have literacy project and can use extra money, you need to apply.
Lisa also talked about the Helene Go Green grant. This is available for
projects about recycling, reusing or conserving. Monies can be used for
school gardens also.
Finally Lisa spoke about the Penne Farrell awards for teachers in their first
through third years of teaching. These are awarded to a nonmember for
purchasing books for the classroom. If you know someone who meets these
criteria, have them apply.
All forms are available at chistateca.org.
Reminder:
Dues are due. Send to Jean before the end of October.
