NARRATIVE REPORT

Asian moms are known to be very strict on handling their family matters, they are
known for being the tigress of the Asian households. As the Philippines belongs to the
countries where Asian moms reside, means that we are one of those kids who were raised in a
stern environment. But, does having an Asian mom really makes us awkward and lonely? In
this event that we, the 1st year students of NSTP- CWTS 2 conducted, it has the objective of
appreciating the cooking skills of our so called ‘asian moms’ in pursuit of celebrating
mothers’ day that was previously celebrated on May 8. As we are taking Culinary Tourism as
a course in a Culinary School, we thought of this as an opportunity to also enhance our skills
and to have a community service that is very close to our heart. With a theme of “Makulay
ang Buhay sa Luto ni Nanay”, we are very euphoric to celebrate the most misinterpreted
tigress of our lives, our mothers.
The cooking contest was held in Barangay Sto. Domingo covered court on the
day of Saturday, May 14, 2022. The event was planned and organized mainly by the 1 st year
Culinary Tourism and Tourism Management students with the help of the school’s
administration and the barangay officials of Brgy. Sto. Domingo. The 1 st year Culinary
Tourism and Tourism Management consists of approximately 100 students and was divided
into 10 groups along with their own assignments such as steering committee, secretariat,
tabulators, first aid, venue preparation and after care, program committee, finances/logistics,
technical team, documentation and reports team and kitchen team. Each block had its own
officers that lead the whole team prior to the event, with the help of our NSTP instructor Sir
Rene G. Zantua, everything was organized very well. With the help of the barangay officials
on searching for possible participants of the said cooking contest, we had a total of 5 moms
from different puroks of Brgy. Sto. Domingo who agreed to take part on the said event.
On May 14, the 1st year students spent their morning having their last preparation for
the event. All the students with the help of the school and barangay officials were very busy
attending to their own duties just to make this event come to life and make this day
successful. At exactly 1 o’clock in the afternoon, the program started. All were very excited
as the masters of the ceremonies welcomed the guests as part of kicking off the event. A
prayer was beseeched to grace the ceremony following the singing of the national anthem to
give respect to our motherland. Barangay Captain Samson Balce gave a message of
gratefulness to the ones who made the event possible and was very glad that he got to have
this competition for his people to enjoy. Our NSTP instructor Sir Zantua also gave his
message thanking everyone who had been giving their efforts for the program and to the
contestants who joined saying that this competition was a late mothers’ day gift for them to
enjoy. It was very good to see all the efforts since day 1 came into reality, all of this would
not be possible without the guidance of the school’s administration.
As the event started, we can all feel the tension as the cooking contest itself was
approaching. The 5 moms were already standing in front of their cooking area where they
will create their special dishes this afternoon. The 5 moms were introduced to the audiences
and was given a round of applause for their fortitude upon joining this contest. Prior to
formally starting the cooking contest, the emcees presented the creditable judges from St.
Francis Caracciolo Culinary Academy starting from Mr. Segfred Joseph Sorita to Dean Jan
Marc Dilanco and lastly Chef Marilyn Guinto. After the judges were presented, judge Mr.
Segfred introduced the Criteria for Judging to the contestants and audiences for them to be
aware how the dishes will be judged. As the presentations and introductions were all set, it is
now time for the exciting part. The contestants were given 1 hour and 30 minutes to finish
their dishes. At the start of the tick of time, the contestants hurried to the pantry area where
they picked up all the ingredients they needed. The team had also assigned students who will
assist the contestants. The 5 moms did not show any signs of weakness during the process, it
is like they really came prepared for this. They all look so confident and I felt like I was just
at home watching my Mama prepare food for us. The covered court was indeed covered with
the smell of home, we are all drooling just with the smell of the foods that were being
cooked. The judges were also very busy noting how the contestants observe cleanliness and
hygiene during the process of cooking as this was a vital criterion for them to fulfill. Time
went by so fast and one by one the contestants were putting their plated dishes on the
presentation table. The judges also started to evaluate the food that has been served. The
dishes look so appetizing for me, each has the aroma of love. I hear the audiences started
betting on their favorite dish but it is really the judges who will decide whose dish is the best.
As the evaluation of the dishes were finished, the contestants now can relax and wait
for the results. As all of us were waiting, thankfully the team prepared intermission numbers
for the audience to enjoy. The audiences suddenly forgot the tension as they saw the students
entertain them with dance and song. The team also prepared raffle contest for the public
audience who attended the event. All winners were very happy and lucky as they were chosen
to receive beautiful gifts that they can bring home with them. After the raffle contest,
certificates of appreciation were given to the judges and participants. And the time has come
for the announcement of winners, we can all feel the tension now but all were very open on
who will win the cooking contest. Contestant no. 5 Gina Villaluna was awarded as the 4 th
runner up with her dish Garlic Buttered Shrimp while Contestant no. 2 Maricar Olavario was
awarded as the 3rd runner up with her dish Buttered Shrimp and Chopseuy Chicken Wings.
Each received a certificate, medal, gift packs and 500 pesos cash. For the 2 nd runner up,
Contestant no. 1 Ofelia Ficaro with the dish Pork Menudo received a certificate, medal, gift
packs and 1,000 pesos cash. With the dish Chicken Wings Caldereta, Contestant no. 3
Michelle Vecino won the 1st runner up and happily received a certificate, medal, gift packs
and 1,500 pesos cash. All were applauding as the last contestant were the only one who is
left. With her winning dish Sweet and Sour Fish, Contestant no. 4 Elza Capistrano happily
received a certificate, trophy, gift packs, 2,500 pesos cash and a scholarship from St. Francis
Caracciolo Culinary Academy. As the event was nearing its end, the closing remarks was
given by Dean Jan Marc congratulating everyone who joined and made the event successful.
Moms are surely powerful and feared by many but mainly not because they are strict
but because they care too much, they love too much. Upon watching how this cooking
contest went by, I saw how those moms put an effort just so they can win and bring prizes to
their beloved families. I saw their perseverance, even if this was their first time joining a
cooking contest, they showed excellent mastery in cooking. I can say that this event was
successful, and it would not be possible without the help of each member and officers and
guidance from our instructor Sir Rene and the school’s administration. Mothers show their
love in different ways, it can be through taking care of you when you’re sick, cheering you up
when you’re down, even their nagging can be a way of showing that they care for you. But
for me, it is how they wake up early in the morning just so they can prepare food for their
families. Asian moms may be hated by their own children at times, but I think it is time for us
to see these moms in another perspective.
